Thinkpads

Im thinking of purchasing a new t42 thinkpad from IBM. IVe heard good things about IBM. I just want to know what u guys think of IBM t42 in terms of multimedia: music and gaming? The video cards arent that impressive and i havent heard much about the sound....anyways i know the thinkpad is great for basic use but how about this stuff?

if you don't like it after you get it from IBM, you can return the unit with in 30 days. Just be sure you get it from IBM and not a third party vendor.

the T42s have the 64mb radeon 9600, which isn't bad at all, but all laptop speakers suck though. my T42 is decent at gaming, but i do whish i had gotten the 128mb FireGL T2, just for the extra 64mb ram. Enemy Territory and Americas Army run really good on this lappy, but kkrieger struggles.

Actually the 9600 is no slouch when paired with a faster processor such as the 1.8Ghz Dothan. It definitely runs the games I play (NFS:HP2, NFSPU, WolfET, SimCity4) without a hitch on the 128meg FireGL T2.

Well, I played UT2k4 on my friend's T42 the other day...1280x1024, all options set to high. It would lag a little in the first few seconds of the round, but after that it was smooth as silk...I was very surprised. It doesn't handle nearly so well in FarCry, but you can still do 1024x768 with high settings. Don't underestimate the little 9600...it runs pretty well when paired with a faster cpu (his is a 1.8 dothan)

I have the T42P 1.8Ghz. I can only attest that it's a solid machine and performs well provided you understand how to set the power management in your favor when you need 100% of the performance the T offers.

I don't play games on it as I have a desktop for that.... and the ThinkPad is issued to me not owned by me.

As for the speakers, I discovered if you go into the audio properties, you can make them a bit louder and sound better, though keep in mind that the embedded audio is designed for business use.

My T42P has much better sound than my Dell Inspiron or my Toshiba Satellite although it still is a bit short compared to the output from the SB Audigy.
