i just received my thinkpad t61 with a 100gb 7200rpm hdd. in windows it states that the notebook is 87gb and theres about 19gbs of preloaded stuff, so straight off the bat i only have around 68gbs left on a 100gb hdd. is this how it is? am i not understanding something here? thanks in advance.

It isn't really a 100GB drive, as Windows reads bytes in Base 2 and not Base 10, so right off the bat, you have a 93GB hard drive according to Windows, then the hidden restore partition takes it down to 87GB. As for the stuff that is pre-installed, just use Add/Remove Programs to take it off. IIRC, Lenovo also includes in the restore partition the option to select which programs you want restored, so you may want to check that out if you want a "fresh start" with only the programs you need.

You will also want to copy off the swtools folder.... that will save you 3.5 gig usually... That folder contains all the driver installers and 3rd party app installers that came bundled with the system.
