just added a fully supported original 1gb chip to my T60 this morning. bios is seeing it fine, windows still thinks that i have my initial 1gb, rather than the new 2gb of RAM.

any ideas why?

update:

- bios IS recognizing it
- microsoft system information in windows IS showing "total physical memory 2,048MB"
- system properties main page is only showing 1gb
- task manager performance window shows only 1gb

have tried:
- swapping the memory bays, same issue
- playing with page file size. changed from 2gb to 4gb and then to system managed.

i want my extra gig :(

Try entering BIOS, don't touch anything in there, but choose "Save settings and exit" (or something similar).
For some reason, this sometimes helps.

A side questikon - to access the SODIMM slots on the T60, do you have to open the keyboard?

nope. just the touchpad and palm rest area. it's real simple though, very straightforward.

Check the barcode numbers of your RAM and see if they fall within these numbers:

"...Known T60 and T60p Memory problem with systems manufactured before June 05, 2006: "

Defective RAM barcodes: 11SxxxxxxxxVJ16Uxxxxxx

Also, what are the FRU numbers on the RAM?

you won't believe how stupid the problem was.

boot.ini had the maxmem = xxxx parameter set up. WHY do people do that? (wasn't me, done by initial setup people). removed the parameter, rebooted, and whoosh - 2gb!

reason i don't feel (that) stupid is cause nobody on AT, IBM tech support, nor my company's support team had any clue...
