Thinkpad R40 opinions

I am thinking of getting a Thinkpad R40 (TR4BDUK number on the UK site) upgraded to 512 Ram. Would this be a viable desktop replacement. I would be using it for Web/Multimedia design/development using Flash MX etc (but not too intense) and was wondering whether the 1.4 Ghz CPU and 32Mb graphics card would be enough.

Also what is the equivalent Pentium 4- M CPU to the Centrino 1.4Ghz

Any comments welcome?

Model details are below

ThinkPad R40
TR4BDUK

1.40GHz Intel Pentium M processor
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
256MB/ 2GB/PC2100 DDR SDRAM
40GB (ATA-100 (Enhanced IDE))

15''
1024x768TFT
ATI Mobility RADEON 7500
3.1Kg

IBM ThinkPad UltraNav

CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo IV

The equivalent would be a P4 @ somewhere very close to 2.2. Your graphics card is a little weak, but should be just fine for what you are asking it to do. Overall that laptop would be just fine. I might suggest a later upgrade to 1GB RAM though.

Isnt these the huge ones?

My school is giving them out to incoming freshmens for them to use thru their 4 years.

I have one, the 1.5Ghz model. The size doesn't bother me, it isn't big or heavy by my standards. Approximately 1.6 inches thick weighing 6.8 lbs isn't so bad. It is nice and sturdy. Only complaint I have is the video card, but that isn't a big deal if you aren't a hardcore gamer. I played Max Payne 2 on it very smoothly, and right now I'm playing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic just fine. Sure not at the best framerates, but very playable imo.

Good quality laptop in my opinion.

That R40 will be more than good enough for what you want to do. The R40 is a nice sturdy machine with a good keyboard. It's a bit on the larger side, but it has a big 8-cell battery standard (the machine was originally designed with the power needs of the Pentium 4-M in mind) and will go about 6 hours max on that 🙂

The size and weight dosn't bother me. I was very impressed with the build quality and keyboard
( which is why i prefer IBM to other makes).

I will not be playing many games so i think the 32Mb card is good enough for multimedia and Flash. I would have liked 64Mb card but IBM only do it on the A series for 15" screen. (too much for my budget)

I will go for the stated R40 now and when i can , go for the R50p.
