Over the course of my experience with desktops, I've gotten very comfortable with 1280x1024. I've also noticed that I'm quite fond of the the higher widescreen resolutions on the dell notebooks. And since I'm considering purchasing a notebook, I just wanted to know if the 1024x768 resolution is ever an issue with thinkpad owners.

Seeing as my T42 is 1400x1050, why would it bother me? ;)

Not all Thinkpads are XGA only. Baseline T-series and most R-series are XGA; there's like one or two R-series that are SXGA+ (1400x1050).

However the T42/43's with 15" SXGA+/UXGA (1400x1050/1600x1200) have the best sceens: Flexview. Its a screen with near perfect viewing angles and high brightness, at the cost of higher power consumption.

Anyway, to answer your question I could not live with XGA. Ever. I can barely use WXGA (1280x768) on the Z60t. I thought I was okay with it while I was testing it, but then when I used my T42 & the WSXGA+ Z60m, it was like a godsend.

My roomate has a T-42 with the lower resolution screan, and while it's a very solid computer, if I were to buy one for myself I would defintely spend the extra cash for the 1400x1050 display. IMHO there just isn't enough screen space if you do any photo editing or really anything besides surfing/word processing.

I personally use my T42 for writing notes... 1400 x 1050 is definitely awesome for having say acrobat split on the screen with word processor. Definitely enough real estate to do both, it's great.

I have a 14.1" R50e with 1024x768 res. I'm perfectly fine with it, even though I've been using my 17" desktop 1280x1024 LCD for the last while. Maybe this is because I tend to maximize my application windows anyway, so for me, 1024 isn't much of a loss compared to 1280. I'd rather have the smaller screen size, along with the associated greater portability and supposed longer battery life.

If you don't have eye sight problem, I would spend a bit more to get at least 1400 x 1050.

1024 is OK but 1400x1050 is better. I upgraded from a compaq Presario w/ 15" 1024x768 screen to a Thinkpad T40p with a 14.1" 1400x1050 screen, and it is simply marvelous. I think that 1024x768 would still look decent on a 14.1" screen however.

Ever since I picked up a 19 inch LCD monitor, I've been regretting my 14" XGA T42 purchase.

I should've bought a 15" T42 with 1400x1500 :(

The 14.1 1400x1050 resolution suits me down to the ground. I could go a little higher, I suppose; but I think 1600x1200 might be a touch small, unless I moved to a 15 inch screen. 1024x768 would involve me gouging out my own eyes, just to end the suffering.

T43P 14.1 1400x1050 here... I've found it perfect for me compared with my previous T42P 15" 1600x1200

1024x768 on my R50e is just how I like it UI wouldn't opt fior 1400x1050 no way, I can't even stand 1280x1024 anymore on my desktop, I am a dual CSE EE I spend 15 hours a day infront of a computer monitor, there is no freaking way I can survive a semester with a 1400x1050 but for each his own.

One of the most important factors in my T43 purchase was that it had the 1400x1050 resolution screen. I paid an extra $150 for a better model mostly for that reason. Personally, I am used to a 17" 1280x1024 LCD and felt like going back to 1024x768 would just be too inconvenient. However, it really is an issue of personal preference and cost. If you can afford it and want a higher res, get it. Otherwise, don't. I'd say if you're unsure, though, go with the higher res. Less likely you'll regret it than going with the XGA screen.

I do find 1024x768 a bit low of a res, but I only have a 12.1" screen. That' s a rather high pixel density and the screen looks very good. Brighter and better viewing angles than probably any Dell I've seen, and images look even sharper than my 19" at 1280x1024.

I use 1024x768 on the 12" screen on my X40.
1024x768 works fine for using one app at a time. But if you multitask alot, it is a pain in the butt.

T43 with a 15" 1400x1050 resolution screen. Res for that size is pretty perfect, would not want to go too much higher.

Flexview is OK. Almost but not quite as good as my Dell WSXGA 1680x1050 screen.

I found the xga on my girlfriend's x30 to be about perfect.
It seems a little sparse on my T41 (14").

I just got a t42p 14" with 1400x1050, and I like that much more (though the screen seemed darker when put next to the t41, I just sent it in for repair, since it may be a dying screen). Maybe the 15" 1400x1050 would have been a better choice, but I really like the compact form factor, and the fact that it takes less power...

I don't think I could use the xga for a primary screen, though. I just got rid of my desktop, and realize I was kind of used to the 1920x1200 resolution that thing ran at.

It really depends on what you use it for.

1400*1050 resolution fits best to the 14" screen I find. 1600*1200 is too small for normal word, excel, internet surfing tasks. There is too much wide open white space not being utilised.

For a 12" laptop I find 1024*768 fits perfectly. Saw one with 1280*1024 and even that was too small.

All depends on your eyes though. Go see one in person if you don't know the differences yet.
