Thinkpad BIOS reports 900mhz CPU, but Windows reports 700mhz. What's wrong?

I just purchased a like new Thinkpad. When I saw the WinXP reporting it 535mhz, I thought, okay, Speedstep Technology has knocked it down a notch. But then I disabled speedstep, it shows 700mhz. I thought that the guy who sold it to me ripped me off by switching CPUs, but then went to the BIOS where it shows processor to be 900mhz. What's going on?

Then why does your title say 800mhz? I don't think you are aware either.

i just checked my Thinkpad T20. It's supposed to be a 700mhz chip, reporting 547mhz. Probably just the way windows counts it.

I don't think windows actually counts MHz, does it? I thought it just took it from the BIOS.

There's some calculation it can do to get CPU speed. I used to have an alias setup in MIRC that would report my cpu speed whenever I did /cpuspeed.

WCPUID is saying 696.667mhz and 896.667mhz, alternatinvg every 2 seconds or so. The multiplier seems to be "flickering" between 7 and 9 with a 100mhz FSB, thus giving a 700/900mhz alternation.

I downloaded CPUID from Intel and it reports 900mhz. I guess Intels are freaky CPU's?

it says 547 because speedstep has notched you down - plug in the adapter or set at full performance and you should see 700mhz. That's how it is with my A21m. That's why I'm wondering what the hell is up here.....
