Thinking PS3 or Netflix?

You'd want netflix for renting blu-ray discs, so yes you want netflix either way 🙂
Streaming HD is going to be low-bitrate, maybe cable quality if you're lucky. The selection is also going to be weak at first.
Blu-ray is very high bitrate 1080p, with no stalling for buffering if you have a network issue.
Also, most new movies are coming out on blu-ray now, so why not see them with the best possible picture?
Disclaimer: I was the first person at work to own a DVD player back in '97 or '98, when players were still $300. I also paid $600 for my 60GB PS3. So I'm more willing to pay for picture quality than most people.
I plan to have both once I can get a Jasper 360, the streaming will be a nice supplement to getting discs in the mail.

I bought a PS3 for Blu-Ray, but really haven't bought many movies since they cost $25-$30 each. I like to wait till I can get 'em for $15-$20.

Netflix really isn't all that expensive either. I pay 14/mo for 2 out at a time (and unlimited streaming). However, if you are mostly interested in the streaming, you can get the 1 out at a time plan for like 9/mo.
In any case, I've been more than satisfied with netflix. I do agree that netflix + a PS3 would be the best thing you could do (that way you can rent blue ray movies and do streaming).

You should get both. Renting blu ray is better than buying, as it adds up quick. Netflix streaming might come to the PS3. In either case you will need Netflix, so you might as well get that, then see what the streaming service is like. Their HD offerings might look good enough and have decent selection so you wont care about blu ray.

BR is expensive if you buy every damn one that comes out like some people who complain about the price of videos games. Nobody forced you to buy everything that comes out. I have a wishlist of which BR movies and games I want and buy one a month. There are just some games/movies I must own. For everything else, there's always blockbuster if I really wanna try it.
I don't know how much it costs to rent blue-ray discs since I don't have a blue ray player and have never looked... but renting video games is a waste unless you only rent the game one time and you're done playing it. They charge WAY too much for something I have to return in a few days. For the price block buster charges for game rentals I should get it for like 2 weeks.... of course if you have got coupons for a free game rental or something ,that's different...
Even then though, if you are the type of player who likes to finish the games completely.. you can rarely do that with a single rental and you end up being better off to buy the game. At least that's how I feel for myself. Especially if I can find the game used for a good price.

Technically, you can hold on to a game rental from Blockbuster for 12 days. They don't charge you late fees after the 5th day but you can only hold on to it for another 7 days before they will charge you the full price of the game.
And then there's always Gamefly.
