Thinking of upgrading to AMD for the first time. Reassure me!

I've always run Intel parts in my machine, their stability is simply outstanding. I started with a P55C 166@233, then went to Pentium2 266, now I'm running a Pentium3 450@558. My dad is offering to buy my old parts so I can upgrade right before college.

I'm thinking I will sell him:
aBit BE6-II
Intel P3 450@558
320MB SDRAM (3 modules)

And buy:
Epox 8K7A
AMD Palomino 1GHZ
512MB PC2100 (2 modules)

I never went AMD before because I didn't want to deal with VIA chipsets, but now the 761 might change all that. So my question is, can I expect the same rock solid stability from this proposed system as I've had from my PIII/440BX setup?

Do it! AMD is the good- yes, the good! Ummm....I might be a bit biased as of late, or you could call that a user testimony. Right. AMD is the good.

The machine I put together based on that mobo was rock solid. Don't try to put in a Netgear FA311 NIC though because that mobo doesn't like that one. Other than that, the build was flawless and it has run no problem at all since.

You should be able to have a system just has stable has your bx. I know mine is unless I go mucking around in it. 😀

Great choice for the Mobo. The Epox 8K7A is a great board although it does use the VIA 686B southbridge, but I have had zero problems with mine. Just download all the needed drivers on epox's website and you are good to go.

The 440BX was a great chipset and most boards were totally reliable. AMD based machines are generally faster than similarly priced PIII or P4 systems, but despite owning an AMD system I would have to say that they are less reliable than my faithfull Intel PII BX system. Nevertheless, if I were to choose between speed and reliability, I would opt for speed every time (except when my machine crashes!).

Go and buy an AMD sytem - you (probably) won't regret it. Even better, keep it in a friend's room, add 12 fans and overclock it to 1.5gig

Go for it. My two AMD systems are pretty reliable (not as stable as the intel machine though, but good enough). 😉

It's only as reliable as your RAM.... Buy good ram, that will save you a TON of headaches on an Athlon playform. Go to www.crucial.com and get that stuff. Best quality, lowest prices.

Ive built 4 Athlon systems.

2 of them were very unstable, the other 2 were super stable.

Guess why those other 2 were unstable? I skimped on RAM! (actually I was not the one who bought the ram it was for my friends comp I built for him, both times.)

I'd say gone are the days when AMD is unstable........ unless you buy a board with say, a 686B Via chipset... NOT all 686B sucks, just most of them. Paired with the AMD 760 NorthBridge seems to do very well. No complaints with 686B paired with 760..... but pair it with another Via NB.. and that is asking for TROUBLE! bigtime.... Via sucks. so does "viahardware" their forums sucks, and have the most biased users in the world..... Ive never heard such BS about Live cards.. I swear ViaHardware has only 3 people on their message boards, but regestered with 100 nicknames to make it seem like "bigger" forum. Oh well, that is why I like anandtech here, because you get a TON of opinions, and people are more pleasent on this board.. usually!

Anyways good luck with your system and I say GO FOR IT!
