My last car buying experience:

Drove to dealer, they were busy.
Went next door and test drove a 328d wagon. Loved it!
Went back to Subaru dealer and test drove a 6MT Fozzy, then a CVT Fozzy.
Bought CVT Fozzy.

Took all of 4 hours :p

I found a Subaru dealer in jersey that has a white legacy 2.5i for the internet price of $21,350 which includes destination fee but not tax, tag, and doc fees. If I don't buy the Mazda 6 that's where I'm gonna go I guess.

So you're going to go with a car that has a CVT BELT transmission that is DEFINITELY going to be less reliable and more maintenance (bet you haven't changed the tranny oil yet) than the transmission design in the mitsubishi? Yup, you're definitely a special kind of...

I did have the transmission fluid replaced on the lancer same with coolant..and I never made up my mind on what car I would be getting. Chances are it would probably be another manual. I just like all the features the legacy comes standard with as well as awd.

Pretty much all automatics are CVT now anyway so I'm not sure what is so surprising.

If you want real reliability, I wouldn't touch ANY belt CVT based vehicles. You can get a CVT that doesn't use a belt design such as in most hybrid vehicles save for Honda's Civic/Insight hybrids. Any vehicle that uses a similar design to a planetary gear set is going to be a reliable transmission design or at least should be.

Ford Fusion is regular 6-speed auto (the 2016 might have the new 8-speed Auto but maybe not until 2017 model).

Except for the fact that Subaru's have metal-band 'pulley' type CVT's. I've also not heard of any serious reliability issues with them.

By belt, that's what I mean. It's certainly no chain.

The vehicles aren't old enough to know if they'll survive a 10th birthday. When I regularly start seeing CVT belt vehicles with 200K miles+, I'll believe in their reliability. I've seen enough reliability issues with standard automatics, CVTs just are prone to having too much heat and friction wear and fluid changes is very important in that design.

Subaru experimented with CVTs in the early 90s. I don't recall why they stopped development though.

Anyway, I do agree we don't know about about their CVT to call it reliable but so far they have been much better than the ones used by Nissan....

Nissan has been doing CVTs for longer so we have a longer history to see their failure rate.

Apples to oranges comparison since they're just buying someone's CVT. Subaru's design is in house (inherently different).

And Subaru is using their CVT for the turbo motors (obviously Nissan is using their with the VQ engines too)

Well the original Subaru dealer agreed to try and match the $21,350 sale price with a quote I got from another dealer. Thats lower than factory invoice from true car. Even said maybe the manager could do a little better.

I'm still going to drive the Mazda 6 and see how that is and maybe see if the guy I worked with though emails could get me a decent price on the touring model. He did take off 2k from their iSport model from their msrp.

I would guess the 6 is a better drive but the last Legacy I drove was a 2012.
The last Mazda I drove was a 2009 rx8 grand touring. Loved the car but had to sell it because I got stuck in snow more than I could count. I liked how the wipers would come on when it rained by themselves, same with the lights.

The 2015 legacy I drove felt very..solid and heavy. Could also be the automatic transmission as I'm used to the really quick take off from manuals.

I'm just afraid I'll like the touring model more in manual because of the stupid infotainment system which may not get me the same deal as I was quoted on the iSport.

I'm sure you can deal. I don't think they're exactly flying off the lots. Heck, Foresters sell like hotcakes and they still deal on them.

Yea maybe, what would you say would be a good price to pay if I'm putting 3k down on the Mazda 6 MT touring? I only got a quote for the regular iSport.

No idea as I haven't looked into pricing at all. I'd say use True car as your max price?

You can swap gears yourself on the auto Legacy too. The car just won't perform as good in auto as most cars of this segment switch gears at low RPMs and have rev limiters in idle to cut down on gas and to prevent nub attempts of breaking up the car.

Look for invoice or less, forget about MSRP. Heck my 3 was pretty new at the time to the market and I still easily got invoice. Manual will probably be even easier to deal on since they aren't as easy to sell. Might also help if you wait till closer to the end of the month when most just want a sale (just have to make sure they still have wjhat you want).

My plan is to go in tomorrow, look at the iSport, go over the quoted numbers then probably ask about the touring and come back towards the 27th.

Test drive an Automatic too, and see what you think.

I would never even consider an AT in my RX-8, but I'm glad I went with the Auto for my 6.

Yea my rx8 was manual 6 speed. The Subaru dealer said they will give me the legacy for $21,350 minus tax and tags. I will make up my mind after driving the Mazda 6.
