I currently have a few lines with Verizon and Cingular. Both have worked great for my needs.
I recently went on a trip from Cleveland, OH to Northern California. It was over 5000 miles roundtrip. I took 2 Cingular phones with me, a Moto V635 and V551. I had great reception for the whole trip. I used the V551 exclusively as a modem for my laptop. It connected to my 700m laptop via bluetooth. It worked out great.
My buddy that was with me was using Verizon. He did have a few dropped calls and reception problems. I was quite surprised by this. It may have been his phone. It was a newer Samsung I believe.
I am sure you would be happy with either service. Myself, I prefer the freedom GSM gives you by using SIM cards. I try out a lot of different phones, and just switching out a SIM makes it so simple.
