Thinking of switching from DSL to Time Warner Cable - Bad Idea?

I've been trying to resolve connection problems with my Verizon DSL line for over two weeks. I have been getting the run-around from them with no end in sight. They have promised to send technicians to the house on two different occasions, and both times nobody showed up. While I'm paying for a 7 Mbps connection, I'm not even getting 1.

I'm thinking about switching over to Time Warner Cable, for my internet access. Does anyone have any experience with them? Anything I should know? I plan to keep my DirecTV service, but am concerned as to whether they will be able to piggyback the DSL signal onto my Coax running the DirecTV signal.

Thanks.

I've used TWC for 5+ years now and love them, esp. when compared to DSL. That said, it once took me 5 weeks and 5+ visits to get cable installed. I was still willing to wait cuz I hate DSL.

bad memories of PPPoE

If we go alllllllll the way back to @Home I've probably been with TWC for over a decade.

twc wanted my parents to pay for a signal booster to repair twc's crappy cable install. their whole neighborhood received terrible service.

I have TWC and have no problems with them aside from the occasional outages(about 3x/year).

What about all the fuss about data caps? Is TWC doing this. I stream Netflix & Hulu quite a bit & upload/download data to my office server pretty often.

I've had TWC for years, we were the first in our neighborhood to get it. It was a jump from 56k to cable at that time, and it was the only high speed internet available. In the beginning it had a lot of outages while they were installing new lines and upgrading, but I would say for the last 8 years it's been fine. They are rarely down, and the speed is fine. I had a modem die once, and they just stopped by within 2 days and replaced it. I could have gone and picked it up too.

I don't know about the caps, haven't heard anything about it since they tested it in limited markets though I don't think it'll affect me since I have TWC under Earthlink.

I thought that with the overwhelmingly bad response they got, they backed out of that. I know I don't have a cap, I abuse the shit out of mine.

IIRC, they did say even subcontracts would be affected if they went forward with it, and Earthlink users were going to have the same caps. All they are marketing in our area are their different speed tiers now, it doesn't mention caps.

My area used to be Adelphia, but got taken over by Time-Warner. Been steadily improving since the takeover. Three years under roadrunner and enjoying it so far. BTW, I only have the internet service, not the cable.

Thanks for all the info. everyone. I think I'll make the switch.
Now I need to fight Verizon, since they will want to charge me an early termination fee. All my troubles started when I tried to upgrade my speed. That locked me into a 1 year contract, but I never really received the service. It was more like a reduction in speed.

Hopefully there won't be any conflicts with my DirecTv signal on the coax.

^^ Same here, when Adelphia owned the internet cable service I had frequent outages (for no apparent reason), and sometimes pretty laggy speed. Since Time Warner took over (Roadrunner service), I've only had maybe 5 outages over the last year that lasted longer than a few minutes, which compared to before is great.

The speed is also pretty good for the top tier package, which here is $65 month, but you get typically 15mbps down and 2 mbps (downloads "burst" at 30 mbps in order to fool speed test type sites).

I went from TW (we're really talking RR here though people) to Uverse DSL.
I really switched for the difference in the TV offerings.
I noticed no difference in the "quality" of the internet offering though. DSL was actually faster vs my RR connection (different speed package though).

I've had them for several years and love it. I just wish they had a speed above 10mb/s here.

You won't have any issues with direct TV. TW will run a dedicated line completely separate from your satellite stuff. Your tech will likely bitch and moan about what the satellite guy did, they are usually half assed and screwed installs.

LOL - I had my dish moved to a different part of the house. The tech guy bitched and moaned about what a crappy install the previous guy did, then I reminded him that he was the one that did the original installation.

You honestly shouldn't be asking us about RoadRunner service, because the quality if implementation can vary so much between areas. Ask any neighbor that has it if they have service outages or periods of poor connectivity.

I can say that I had a great experience when I was on RR back in ST NY, but this won't necessarily apply to you.

That's priceless.

My brother has TWC in San Diego, CA.

They do that stupid bullshit DNS thing that makes troubleshooting really difficult and confuses some software. If you type a web address with an invalid domain name, it "successfully" resolves to their own server and shows paid ads and bogus search results.

We had 7mbps TWC cable here and were satisfied with it (except they mistakenly cut our coax for a few days because it was mislabeled as our neighbors'). We just switched to 12mbps Uverse, but mainly because we were tired of TW's bullshit rate increases on cable TV.

Both are good ISPs IMO.

The OP should definitely switch to TW cable. With a name like "Time Warner" how could he possibly go wrong. "Time" is forever, unless you are a Creationist and "Warner" is, well, it is what it is. It's kinda like Smith, Jones or Acme.

This is a wise decision.
