This was a failed business model a decade ago, I can't believe I'm still reading about people wanting to do it.

It's because some people will build a PC or two, or fix a family member's computer and then think they can run a computer repair business.

It is natural to develop a skill and then look for ways to use that skill to earn money. We all do this. Do not fault the OP or anyone else for aspiring to use their skills to make money. Rather, commend him for looking for a way to take his skills to the next level and assuming the risk involved in such an undertaking.

Thanks but I pretty much already know all this. I was only asking how I can be recognized by my community and to the IRS as an official business as apposed to being just a person doing things for money "under the table".

I guess the question is why?

Word of mouth > having a business license and less of a headache during tax time.

What I would suggest is go talking to the smaller "mom & pop" computer stores - see what steps they had to go through to become a "recognized" business entity.

Awesome idea. Just don't tell them you'll be competing against them.
