Thinking of replacing my SV650s

I embarked on my motorcycle adventure last summer and picked up a lower mileage Silver 2003 SV650s. It has been a fantastic and tough bike and I've put 16k miles on it since I got it 12 months ago. I love how flick-able it is, but there are quite a few things that make me want something different, especially as I have started doing a lot of Sport Touring through the twisties of Northern California.

1. The 2003 model has many unique parts on the rear sub-frame. This makes luggage racks, custom seats, etc etc impossible or very hard to find, kind of a bummer for touring.

2. When you load up the SV with some luggage and some hills, I find the performance a bit lacking.

3. Bike is 11 years old. I know I could do a lot of things to it to make it a better bike (suspension especially on the SV) but it is hard to justify throwing money at it.

4. I do a lot of two up riding and the riding position of the SV isn't great, especially when you are trying to stop, facing down hill, two up.

I'm thinking a 2nd Gen Yamaha FZ1, because it has a good mix of performance, good riding position, and after market mods. Any other bikes that you guy's would vote for?

Well, depending on old you're willing to go, these are some great options with terrific aftermarket support...
BMW 1200 R is a fantastic sport tourer
KLR 1200/650 is a great adventure bike
Honda NC700X no personal experience
Honda VFR1200 no personal experience
Yamaha FZ7 no personal experience

Triumph Tiger 800
Triumph ST 1050
Suzuki V-Strom 650 or 1000
Suzuki Bandit 1250F

The Triumph 1050 looks awesome, but I can't find too many for sale in the area. Only one I found was at Scuderia West in SF for 7500. 2008 model with 30k Miles. Meh...

V-Strom 1000 and Bandit 1250 are solid, but I just am not that in love with the looks.

BMW 1200 R looks a little pricey for me. I think I'm going to stick Japanese for part cost/reliability.

KLR 1200.. hmmm interesting, but I'd like something more sporty.

NC700X looks awesome, I'll investigate

VFR1200, not finding many for sale in the Bay

FZ7? hmm I think I'd rather do the FZ1.

I think the fz1 would be better for you if you're doing 2 up riding and the sv650 is getting a little bogged while riding with luggage. They are built like tanks and there are tons of aftermarket parts, bags, gear etc for them.

Don't discount the KLR too much, you'd be surpised what a set of street tires can do for a 'dirt' bike ... https://www.google.com/search?q=klr...oAg&biw=1691&bih=640#q=klr+supermoto&tbm=isch 🙂

Honestly, given your input (minus the Japanese bike comment), i'd say you're a prime candidate for a Ducati Multistrada. they're on the reliable end of the ducs and aren't super expensive used.

I hate to talk someone out of buying a Ducati, because I love them, but they can be pretty temperamental and unless you work on them yourself they are pricey to service. Great bikes otherwise.

The newer liquid cooled Multis are still going for well over the ten thousand dollar range used. He could look for the older ST2/3 or the air-cooled 2009 and earlier Multistrada but again, maintenance=$$$.

The new Yamaha FZ09. End of discussion. I don't know exactly how comfortable it would be for 2up, but it's not lacking the power for it.

definitely a vote for the FZ1. I don't know how long the ninja1000 and CBR1000 (non-RR) streetbikes have been around, but i'd also check those out.

i love my ninja1000.

Not really end of discussion. There are very limited hard luggage options on that bike and most of them require drilling the frame. I've discovered I can't go back from having a hard top case. I use it daily and absolutely need it for touring
