Thinking of playing Halo 3

So, do I need to know what was going on in the first two to understand 3 or will I be good to go? I will be playing the first Halo 3, then possibly getting the new expansion.

FWIW I played Halo 3 without having played any of them and it was still fun. The story was confusing but I had someone explain the first two and then it was fine.

Gameplay wise there are only two really hard parts on Legendary, the rest is easy.
