Thinking of going X-box for Oblivion...but have a question first...

I've never had a console (not since Sega Master System anyway) and I was wondering about vertical sync ability. I remember playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on a friend's playstation and I remember thinking how much better it looked on my pc, particularly because of all the image tearing on the playstation. So at the time I figured playstation has no forced Vertical Sync option -- so maybe neither does X-box?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks...!

Image tearing on TVs is not an issue, IIRC. Vsync is a must for TV specs.
You're prob thinking about the image moving around on PS1. That has to do with a glitch in their processor that had a hard time mapping textures on polygons...or something like that.

lol yes, oblivion makes most pc's its b*tch. just the truth.
unless u got some uber system, just get the xbox version.

Looking at your system specs, it will not run oblivion that great. If you have a HDTV, i'd recommend it on the xbox360. Even without the mods, the game is still great as is. My system is brought to it's knees by oblivion, fwiw and that's not including the eye candy mods which tax it further.

I have it for 360 and wish I would have picked it up for the PC.

My 360 has froze on the loading screen somewhere between ten and twenty times.

Plus, I would rather save the ten bucks (in your case $400).

You should be able to get a decent framerate at 1280x1024, but you won't be able to use HDR (since you don't have a SM3 card) and you'll probably have to turn a few other settings down. Still, I'd buy it for the PC, not only to save the extra 400 bucks, but because there's some awesome mods for the PC version out . You'll probably want Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, it replaces the levelled lists so that you can still encounter low level creatures at high levels and vice versa, makes rewards scale to the level of the creatures, not the player, and also makes sure that when you get to higher levels, the bandits aren't all dropping high level armor all the time.

If I upgraded my memory to 2GB and my video card to the X1900 512 MB, will that make a noticeable difference?

Yes, I think you can run it with your system as is (no HDR however), but with the 1900 and 2gb of ram you'll have no trouble at all meeting or exceeding the performance of the Xbox 360. Do keep in mind this is not a FPS, and 30FPS is very playable.....the Xbox 360 version itself is running at 30, if I'm not mistaken.

Here is a quote from Firingsquad concerning that:

"What does concern me is that we've yet to see a high-shader-complexity game running at 60 fps." Firingsquad, concerning Xbox 360 games.

*brain explodes* you have to be joking... you cant even run oblivion on full settings across the board with a FX 60, 2 GB ram and Dual X1900 XTXs while the 360 can...

You kidding? My CPU runs at FX-60 speeds, I have 2GB ram and a 7800Gt (no-where near 2x x1900xtx) and oblivion looks like the most beautiful game I've ever seen - the only frame drops happen in areas with loads of grass - and even then, the lowest I get is 20FPS - the system you quote (should) play the game perfectly!

If you have the money, go for a decent PC system that will do the game justice - the XBOX version will probably work better out of the box, but bear in mind that the games themselves are twice the price and the system offers no upgrade options, fewer mods and wont offer any where NEAR the possibilities that PCs can give u - save the $400 (or whatever) and get a new graphics card instead - then you're set!

*Chuckles while going back to Oblivion at graphical levels well-exceeding the 360*

The 360 is only 1280x720, with HDR and 2xAA, and ZERO AF! And less draw distance! All this, for 30 FPS maximum and considerable drops in both GPU limited and especially CPU limited areas. A X1900XT with a decent Athlon 64 ought to be able to double that amount of processing.

Oblivion is a strain on even the best of PC's with SLI configurations (read the recent Anandtech articles and note they have had to turn down the settings even on their "high quality" settings.

I have both the PC version and the Xbox 360 version. I have spent quite a bit of time tweaking the ini file on the PC version to get it playable (this at 12x10 on a X2 4400, GTX 7800, 2 MB ram) but it's still not that great in terms of frame rate in outdoor settings and complex towns. It's fine inside dungeons. Looks nice with AF enabled but still no AA if you want HDR (at least for Nvidia cards). I've also downloaded some of the mods which are a nice extra for the PC version.

By contrast, I pop in the 360 version and its been trouble free (no freezes or other issues) and looks great (assuming you have a nice HDTV). I play it through a DLP projector and project it on a screen so the image is 10 feet wide and the level of immersion is excellent. It is also worth noting that the control scheme on the 360 is nicely implemented and it seems like the interface was designed with the 360 in mind. There is a rumble effect on the joystick and variable movement speed.

I am enjoying both versions but the PC version is definitely choppier.

Hope this helps you decide - great game whichever version you go with.

I think the verdict is clear:

Different platforms have different advantages and it depends on your person preference and setups.

The PC is the best way to play IF you have the right hardware. Thats a big IF. If you do; however, then you'll be in a position to do tweaking and download mods not available to X360.

If you do not have a very high end PC; however, you'll need to decide between the advantages of great graphics versus mods.

An XBOX allows great and stable graphics, while the lesser PC allows lesser graphics but the availability of mods.

The X360 is a no-brainer in terms of ease of use as the game appears designed for it, such as the menus, and the ease of playing right out of the box is a definate plus.

So there ya go... Stop arguing. It all depends on your own personal situation as well as preferance.

The 360 version isn't trouble-free. There are reports of quest problems with it as well.

Regardless of any thing else, mods > *.

2gb of ram is nice to have I suppose but the x1900xt(x) will give you the biggest performance jump. I'd go for it.

I've heard the loading times vary on some of the 360's for that game. I have a buddy that plays the PC version just because of that. He has both versions.
