Thinking of going with passive cooling

First my system:

Case: Antec Sonata (2 - 120mm fans)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI
Processor: Athlon 3500+

I currently have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 and the fan is going out on it. Was going to replace it with something a little more quiet when I ran into the Thermaltake HR-01. Seems like it works with just the case fans, and performs rather well.

Is the Thermaltake HR-01 the best choice for passive cooling? I'm thinking about getting a fan controller for the front and back 120mm fans. When I'm not playing a game (IE: when computer isn't at full load) I'd like the turn the fans down (around 7Vs) so the system is more quiet. Is that even an option with a passive cooling heatsink? Or will the temps be waay too high?

Make sure the HR-01 mounts correctly in the motherboard. It should face front and rear, which will direct the duct straight into the 120mm in the rear of the case. If it doesn't, then you SHOULD NOT get it. You can, however, try a Scythe Ninja!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How will I know if it will mount correctly? The holes in my board (next to processor, which I assume I would use to mount...) are on the top and bottom of the processor socket

edit: btw, which is better? sycthe ninja or hr-01?

The Scythe Ninja is, bar none, the best widely-available passively-cooled heat sink.

True dat, and install the ultra quiet fan it comes with and you will make a pretty big difference.

sweet, guess that answers my question above 😛

is this it? There's a couple different revisions it looks like

http://www.svcompucycle.com/scnj-1100p.html

The "Plus" version comes with a fan, the "rev. B" version adds compatibility with Socket AM2. Those are the only differences.

went with the scythe ninja (w/fan, depending on noise level)....hope you guys are right 😉

Next up, Thermaltake HR-03 I hope 😀
