I really like my APS-C 40D. It's fast, takes nice photos, etc.

Today, I stopped in the local camera shop, and they had a used 5D Mark I for $1000. It has a 10 day return policy, and the guys said to give it a try.

I bought it and put on the only non EF-S lens that I have, the 50mm 1.8 Mark II. All, I can say is wow! The colors, the depth of field, the low noise at high ISO's. It is all just amazing. Plus, the viewfinder is so nice and big. It is really a nice experience.

Of course, the UI and AF suck, but those are just minor details. Right?

what's wrong w/ the UI? sure it's a bit dated, but it's functional. but yeah, lame AF. then again, the 5D is what, 6yrs old or something? The 5D2 has lame AF... it's virtually the same damn thing 6yrs later =(

But my glass is canon, I can only thank nikon for kicking canon's ass around. competition is great.

Also, did you really feel it was THAT much of an improvement? It was more of a "well that's nice, noise isn't that shitty anymore." But maybe i'm just spoiled by what I've seen from the newest stuff from canikon. I did welcome returning to a large VF. when I had my 20D, I'd go back and forth with my K1000 and pout a little, heh

I agree. I went from a 20D to a 5D, which was a huge step up.

Also, a note on file sizes between my 5D and 30D..even though the 5D has only ~50% more pixels, its images are typically about 2.5x bigger than the 30D. The amount of depth you can get from a FF sensor is unparalleled.
