Thinking of Going From Noctua NH-D14 to Corsair H80 - Worth the jump?

As the title asks, I am planning on getting a Corsair H80 "water-cooling" solution for my CPU; the i7 990X.

I have used the Noctua NH-D14 for about 16 months and it has worked flawlessly.

My CPU is OC'd to 4.41GHz @ 1.30V (v-core) and never goes past 67C on any of the cores under 100% load.

Just ran a couple of benchies yesterday @ 950MHz/2250MHz:

The reason I want to get the H80 (or the H100 - may be too big to fit with all my other components) is to try and get my CPU to 5.0GHz for 24/7 use. I am rock solid at 4.41GHz 24/7 usage and everything is working great. Hence, my apprehension about changing something that works (If it ain't broken...).

First and foremost, is achieving ~5.0GHz (I'd be happy with 4.8GHz as well) stable realistic with an introductory level liquid cooling system like the Corsair H80/H100? Is there anyone on this forum who has achieved such high clocks with these coolers? If so, what are the 100% load temps of the CPU?

Since my 4.41GHz clock requires 1.30V for stability, I would assume that getting to 5.0GHz would need at least 1.40V. What kind of temps can I expect with the H80? With the H100? Would the difference between the Noctua NH-D14 and the Corsair H80/H100 worth the switch?

I rendered a scene in Cinema 4D (and encoded the video like a retard) for about 9.5 hours!! It was rock solid and there wasn't a single hiccup although the CPU was at 100% the ENTIRE TIME! 😱

I would like to have the same stability around 5.0GHz. What voltage do you think I'd require to achieve such a clock?

Any positive and relevant advice is much appreciated.

Yeah an H80 or even a two fan H100 are less about better cooling (though they are pretty good in their own rights) its about noise and size. As long as you don't have air in the pump (somewhere in Nov they had issues that seemed to affect purchases up to mid january), the stock fans and pump should keep noise down to a minimum, while not getting in the way of other options on the board. Air coolers are still going to be able to get close you just end up with a monstrosity hanging off your mobo.

If you are already fine in that sense with your D14, I would keep it.

Edit: The other advantage and why I got a H80, was that it a cooling setup like that, combined with the power supply and my future vid card choise, will allow me to keep any heat outside the HDD's from getting dispensed into the case.

You won't see an improvement from the d14 to h80. The only advantage is that it looks nicer inside your case 🙂
