when i was there i booked almost all of my hostels thru www.hosteleurope.com

if you are going to the islands in greece, dont worry about reserving a hostel ahead of time if you are not picky. there are always people standing at the boat landings with places to stay and are really cheap.

Watch the recent movie "Hostel" and LMK if you still want to attempt this. This crap is real, you know!

Don't try to go to too many places at once. Give yourself at least 3 days per city.

would you recommend taking a ferry or flying to the island?

definately ferries. they have both fast and slow ones, we took the fast ones which saved us almost a whole day of traveling, but you ill spend about twice as much on ferry tickets. we flew into athens from rome and then just ferried around the islands for 8 days.

i'd also recommend the turkish coast, right across greek islands. same architecture, same food, same culture, same clean sea, just cheaper and more friendly people... at least till it lasts as EU took many of those away from Greece... Turkey is not in EU, so its still cheaper and friendlier...

good luck.
