My main problem is cooling. I have an XP 1900+ with an Epox 8HKA+ and need a massively loud fan to keep it in the 45-50c range. I got fed up with the noise and put a much quiter fan on there but now I run at 55C at load, which is annoying to say the least :(

I am looking at the Intel 1.6A, and hoping to overclock it to 2.4 with a bit of luck...I have Crucial PC2100 memory, and wondering if anyone has gotten it to do 150FSB, and with what settings

Also wondering what a good motherboard for the 1.6A would be. Don't really care about extras, just something thats stable, fast, with good O\C options :)

Well, I had sort of the same problem back when I was running a 68 cfm Delta 80 mm fan on top of my Alpha PAL8045 heatsink (at this config, I was running at roughly 40 degrees Celcius). I got sick of the noise (sounded like a damn aircraft carrier) and switched to a quieter sleeve-bearing fan. That cut the noise into about half, but my temp was hiked up to around 50 degrees.

Now, 50 degrees really isn't that bad for a .18u Athlon. The stock retail heatsink/fan will generally keep the processor at around 60 degrees with proper ventilation. Nothing dramatic to worry about, actually...... People like me are sort of oblivious to the fan noise issue to an extent; seeing that I run SCSI drives now for A/V editing.

But if you decide to make the switch to Intel, good luck to you. I have several friends who have gotten their 1.6A's to exceed the 2 GHz mark.

Is your system locking up or showing other signs of instability?

On my next rig I am moving to the "Darkside" myself. I am looking into the P4 1.8A. I used to be all about AMD but I guess Intel setup are not looking to bad now. I think a better price/performance motherboard would be ASUS P4S533 or the Epox EP-4G4a+. The Epox is a little more expensive but comes with onboard RAID.

Yes, Definitley get the 1.6a and overclock the hell outta it.
Read this link and the info about the processor and the board that you should use.
Then read this link for everything you've ever wanted to know about overclocking a northwood.

Why the concern over temperature if you are not overclocking? (you did not say you were OC'ing the 1900). Simply add a panaflow exhaust fan to your case to guarantee airflow and use the AMD retail heatsink/fan, which is quiet.

The Athlon CPU is fully usable up to 70 degrees celcius, and can tolerate up to 90 degrees celcius, so unless overclocking temperature should not be an issue.

If you are capable, you may wish to replace your power supply fan with either a panaflow fan or a temperature controlled fan also.

Anyone who thinks that the AMD stock fan is quiet has cotton in his ears. It's at least three times as loud as an Intel stock fan and is entirely too loud.

I'm referring to the coolermaster retail unit (common in Australia at the moment).

It is very quiet in comparison with other AMD coolers. I never compared it to an Intel cooler, though I doubt it is that much louder. Certainly it runs quieter than the little coolermaster duron coolers used to and they were pretty good (useless for Athlons though).

Also check out the CPU and Overclocking forum to see what people are doing with their 1.6A's...

P4 1.6A @ 2.4, 150 fsb, 33c, stock hsf, Prime95 stable.

The AMD retail HSF spins at 4500 and it's way too loud for my taste. With my Intel rig which sits on the desk with me the loudest fan is the one on my geforce 3. I've unplugged that and I can't even hear the thing. The AMD's fan drowns out the video card and antec smart case fans. It's entirely too loud and I can't get any work done with it on my desk. Get the cotton out of your ears.

I thought that loudness is measured in db, not RPM of the fan. I don't necessarlly equate RPM speed to noise, the stock fan in the retail CPU's is not loud at all.
As for temps, as long as you're not OC'ing, 55c under load for a 1900+ XP is still very good temp. The only problem is if that temp causes instability, which I highly doubt it would.

Exactly how quiet is the Intel stock fan? Right now I am running a Volcano 6cu= with it's 7000RPM LOUD fan. Will I see a big difference when I cross over?I was looking into a 1.8A over a the 1.6A.

The people who say that the AMD stock fan isn't loud should hear my intel system with antec smart fans and an enermax whisper power supply. Probably get the same reaction as at my last LAN party. "WOW! You can't hear it at all!" After that you'll never look at that athlon cool the same way again.
Puppetmaster, you will definitely see a huge decrease in noise on the processor. However, you should also get some quiet adjustable speed fans and a quiet power supply too.

my 2.4 b 533 is so quiet i keep wondering if its on
compared to my louder willie 1.5 its like night and day
the northwood is also cooler and has more to heat it up (two harddrives, dvd cdrw, hotter video oh and two less case fans
get whatever processor fits you.

hope this helps

A plus for Intel. Not only is the stock fan quiet, but the whole hsf assembly is very effective at it's job...:)

I just put in my 1.8A. Started it at 1.8Ghz. Now at 2.1Ghz (120FSB) and will aim for 2.4Ghz (132FSB) soon. It's only at 32C. I think I went overboard with the fans. I have like 6 in the case and it sounds like a F-15, at least it's fast and stable.

I'm using the Asus PB533 and 512MB PC2700.

I don't understand what everyone here is talking about when they say their AMD system is loud.

I have a T-bird 1.2, with an AX-7 heatsink and an 80mm fan. One intake, one exhaust in my case, and my vid card fan - and you can barely hear my computer if you're ~5 feet away.

I'll cut my arm off before I give my money to Intel!!!!!

Then again your posting how to "creat link"...lmao....anyway I love my P4 1.6a on Asus P4s533. I have 2 panaflo L1a, 1 enermax 80mm case fan and a 92mm HD cooler. System is way quiet and rock stable at 2.2 ghz never over 40 degrees.

That's nice. I can barely hear my system from 5 centimetres away. The fan on my videocard was drowning out the rest of the system!!!! That's with antec smart fans of course. I really did love the post that AMD fanboy made "How do you make a link to a website?" Yes, obviously some great insigts on computers that one must have...

My 1.6A/P4S533 combo is sweeeeet. I threw it together, put in two 256MB sticks of Cruical PC2100, set the FSB to 140 and it's been there ever since. Stock voltage, stock HSF, 34C (38C under load) and 2.24Ghz. I don't realize just how quiet mine is until I turn off my wifes computer (XP1600+ with a WBK38)...the P4 is a very quiet system.

I am already prepared for a quiet system. I have an Enermax Whisper 350W and Vantec Stealth Case Fans. The only thing that I can hear is my Volcano 6cu+
