I have a mazda Protege5 2003...need something bigger and do not like the fact that SUVs get such horrible gas mileage. May consider an XTERRA but also like the Subarus.

I was in a rented outback once. Let me tell you.. it was extremely cramped in there.

I have an outback sport and love it. 160K in 5 years and still going strong. Are you looking at the Legacy outback (full sized) or the Impreza outback (smaller one)?

what's the point of the outback over the legacy GT? same car, basically, but one of them is going to be a LOT more fun to drive.

It's an SUV for people that don't want an SUV. And it sells a hell of a lot more than the plain old legacy wagons. (Or at least in previous model years).

more cramped than a P5?

How big are you? I've never driven a P5, but I've rented an Outback. I'm 5'8" and around 155lbs. I didn't feel cramped, but I can see someone larger saying otherwise.

It's probably a good move. I'm looking to get into a 2007 legacy sedan in the upcoming months...WRX is just way too expensive to insure.

We've had at least one Subaru wagon in our household for the last million years. Awesome cars, never had a single problem with them.

Outback XT is the only wagon offered with a manual transmission, turbo engine to boot I believe.

If you don't need the extra ride height & "offroading" capability in that regard, go for the regular Legacy wagon. The turbo engine is supposed to be awesome for power and gets okay MPG.

Super reliable cars, a great value IMO, and practical too. Go for it!
