Inspired in part by this thread:
We (= my parents and I) are looking for ways to save money, and our $60/mo phone bill is on the top of the list of things we're looking to trim. The idea came up a few weeks ago to get rid of our landline service altogether and get a few cell phones (1 for home, 2 for cars). I have some questions:
1. Is there any possibility that we can keep our current phone number? We've been paying this "number portability" charge every month, it must be good for something...
2. Where should we go for phones and service? Any specific retail place, website, etc?
3. What's our best bet for bare-bones voice service? We have no use for SMS, phones with cameras, etc...
4. Any way to avoid roaming charges?
If it makes a difference (and I'm sure it does) we're in the west Michigan area.
EDIT: I've pretty much decided against fragging the landline. However, I have decided to get prepaid phones for the cars and am still open to advice on these.
