In lieu of everything that has transpired this week, I am thinking of getting a firearm to protect my family.

I have hunted in the past when I was young with a shotgun and also got certified on the 9MM by the Air Force.

Any suggestions on what to get and where from? I would like to spend less than 300 dollars and it would be primarily for defense.

Also, what is required to get one. I have never purchased one just used other peoples

A shotgun is best for home defense. I's suggest a Mossburg 12 gauge pump with a pistol grip and a laser sight or flash light attached.

Be sure to educate your children about guns, and have a safe and effective means of locking up the gun. Maybe even take a refreasher course on gun safety, and bring your wife and kids with you.

I'd suggest a Remington 870 Express pump shotgun. I've got one, I don't believe it cost more then $200 new. I keep mine in the closet, with three shells in the magazine, but the chamber empty. This way, I have to depress the pump lock and actually pump it to get it ready. The sound of a pumping shotgun alone would be enough to deter most home invaders. And the 870 Express is popular among law enforcement, so aftermarket add-ons are plentiful. It also does double duty as a nice hunting shotgun.

I believe they've gotten rid of the 5 day waiting period on handguns. I was looking to purchase a 1911 this spring, and my local gun shop owner told me I could take it home the day he got it in. They'll do an instant background check, and as long as you pass, you can take it
home.

Local gun shops are a good place to start looking. You might pay a little more, but I can imagine the bigger stores might be leery of selling firearms at this time (I could be wrong). If there's one in your area, Dick's Sporting Goods always advertised having the 870's in, but I believe my father went in once to pick one up for himself and they had none in stock. I'd imagine any sporting goods store that carried firearms will have them.

To buy it, you'll need yourself, and your drivers license. No special permits/etc are needed

<< Mach 1, Cartman this isn't, Mach 1 I said. >>

It's Mac 10. AFAIK A Mac 10 is a fully automatic assault gun.

If you want a pistol, there are two schools of thought. One is, semi-automatic pistols that don't get used often have a much greater chance of jamming and a revolver is almost impossible to jam. The advantage to a semi-automatic pistol is the number of shots you can get off. If, and this is extremely doubtful, you ever have to use a gun in your house, you'll be flying w/ adrenaline and will probably need at least 10 shots just to hit your target. They're right about a shotgun though. It will make it much easier to hit someone.

The Ingram/Cobray Mac 10/11 Is a boxy looking assault pistol with a clip in the handgrip.
Although it is more widely known as a fully-automatic pistol, it is available in a semi-automatic variety but nowhere near the 300$ price tag.
It chambers a 9mm/.380 ammo which is not exactly a "manstopper" round. Older variations chambered a .45 round, however they are few and far between now.

If you want a pistol with stopping power you should go for a .45 with safety slugs or a .44 automag.

I would have to agree with Mr. Bond that there is nothing that sends a shiver down your spine more than the sound of a round being chambered in a pump shotgun.

I believe NC is still pretty liberal about long gun purchases, all you need is a drivers license.

All of the modern shotguns are pretty good, Gun Tests likes the Winchester 1300 black Shadow Field, list price $296. Though We'd like it better with the optional 26 inch barrel, we gave this gun a clean bill of health, and believe it to be well worth it's retail price. when you factor in street cost, whick puts this Winchester into your hands for around $250 to $270, it's a great bargain. Also, we firmly believe in simplifying our shoopting. We find that when we reduce the number of possible choices, our skill is usually higher, our success is greater, and our enjoyment is maximized. Out of this test we'd pick the Winchester 1300, add an improved cylinder tube to our bag and go with that. It ought to cover all options, Buy it.

Gun Tests is the Consumer Reports of the gun world, they accept no advertising and give a very impartial review. I prefer a Remington 870 Marine Magnum myself.

Can you suggest a good .357 magnum?? I thought about the Smith & Wesson but it seems like all the gun dealers around here have been boycotting S&W for some time now and the prices are ridiculous.

Nitemare,

Listen to those who are suggesting a shotgun for home defense, and feel free to ignore everyone else.

I'm curious, though. You are wanting to purchase a weapon in light of what has happened this week. Were you anticipating a jumbo jet crashing in to your house, and preparing to shoot it out of the sky?

Come on, people, if you are going to buy a firearm, do so because you believe in the right to own them, enjoy firing them and feel a genuine need; not because of the fear generated by this terrorist act.

As a long time gun owner, my worst nightmare is that thousands of people will suddenly rush out and arm themselves without the training and skill necessary to be safe with the weapon.

Depends on what state you are in. You can own fully automatic weapons in Alaska, but you have to get properly licensed for them. I have a Mac-11/Nine.

First, a gun won't help against a terrorist, unless you have it on you when attacked...

Second, if you don't own one now, think it over again...

Third, if you're still interested, find someone in your area who you feel you can trust to give you good info, anyone not trying to hard to sell you something is a good first bet. There are a ton of people in this business for the love of it and not for the money...

Fourth, price shoud NEVER be your concern when buying a gun for self defense, buying a gun that goes bang EVERYTIME is the most imporant point...

Fifth, for home defense, a shotgun is worth its weight in gold...

Sixth, for a handgun, either a good .38 special revolver, or if you really want a semi-auto, a Glock is a good choice, they have a good habit of going bang all the time. I'm partial to the Government .45 myself... (1911)

Please understand, I'm a gun nut... I love guns, I own a dozen of them, I get a kick out of them... This being said, buying a gun that sits under your bed is NOT security, as nice as it might feel... You need to shoot it, pratice with it, get to know it... God willing you'll never need it, if you do, you should be one with it...

Personally, I keep a shotgun under my bed, and a handgun under my computer table... the rest are locked in my gun safe...

You can buy a Mossberg 500 for your price range, but very few good sem-autos are in that price range. A good .38 special can be had there... The Remmington 780 is also a great gun, if more money... A new Glock will set you back about $550...

<< you could buy an AK-47 from a 3rd world country for under $100 USD ;) >>

Not legally...

You can legally buy a semi-auto AK-47 for about $280 (forget fully auto, that is a special military tool that has no use for a single person, Rambo not withstanding...)

The Mossberg 500 is perhaps the best first home defense shotgun, easy to shoot, cheap to buy, works every time... and you don't always have to shoot, even thugs are scared of that racheting sound of it being loaded...

if you have a wife and kids, they must know how to use it, that it is in the house, and the kids know not to touch it...

<< I thought the Mac-10 was a submachine gun? >>

The Mac-10 is a sub-gun, the semi-auto versions cost about $250 new, the fully auto version (yes they are legal) cost about $1,000 new...

The M11/9 is the cheapest and shoots the cheaper ammo (9mm costs less than .45 ACP ammo the Mac-10 uses)...

Both are VERY poor choices for anything but the movies, they are horribly inaccurate...
