i was plannin on spending around 100 dollars on a processor and the xp 2600 is 101 at Newegg.

which heatsink is the best heatsink? i dont want it to be TOO loud.

one more question: should i get the athlon XP 2600, or the athlon XP 2500 Barton?

I have started using the Vantec AeroFlow on both my AMD and P-4 systems. It is relatively light, fairly quiet, and cools as good or better than all but the biggest, heaviest, and loudest all copper coolers.

Right now I am in a room with the ambient temp a little over 80 degrees farenheit. My 2.66c P-4 is clocket to about 3.3 and the fsb is a little over 1,000. The CPU temp is 39 Celsius.

My XP2400 and XP2500 Barton run about the same or maybe a couple of degrees higher even when overslocked.

I bought the AeroFlows at Fry's for $30 with the TMD fan. I liked the TMD fans so much I bought 4 more ($8 each) and replaced the case fans on two of the systems. I think Newegg has them for a little less.

First, I would get a 2500+XP retail for $90 @ Newegg. As for a decent HSF, are you going to o/c a lot. just a little, or not at all?

Thermalright SK7 for $19.99 at svc.com, I would pair it with a Panaflow 80MM L1A for dead silent performance.

Go with the Barton 2500+. I am running mine at 2800+ with the retail HSF which I lapped and used AS3. Ambient room temps are 80F and CPU is at 118. The retail HSF is nickel plated copper with a nice quiet fan. Cools very well. And at $90 for the retail package it's a great deal!

I'd recommend the 2500XP Barton + SLK800/900 also. This is one heck of an overclocking chip.

best afaik is SLK900. best taking into account price might be a different story, depending on how much youre willing to spend. also note that hsf needs mounting holes on the mobo, which it seems most - but certainly not all - mobos have. there's a motherboard compatibility page somewhere on the Thermalright site.

http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm - i should put that in my sig or something :/
