Thinking of getting a OCZ Modstream

I'm thinking of getting another PSU, my Enermax 460 watt is in my main system but I just built a backup rig and the PSU won't turn on so I figure its dead. So i'm thinking of moving my Enermax over to that one and getting a OCZ Modstream 450 watt PSU. I like the looks of the OCZ because of the connectable cables. Thats a problem I have with my Enermax, cables all over. I've been looking at the 450 watt and the 520 watt OCZ's. I'm leaning twards the 450 because of the 24 pin motherboard conector and I have a 460 watt right now and it runs fine and its cheaper.

I've read alot post about the modstreams and it seems like they are good quality PSU's but let me post my specs and see if anyone sees any problems.

A64 3200+ vinice
Abit AN8 Ultra
1gb OCZ pc3200
2 200gb WD HDD's
NEC 3500a DVD-RW
DVD-ROM
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
3 case fans

Just looking for some opinions, thanks.

get a seasonic s12 modstream doesnt compete with that baby. check out tom's hardware guide on it got an 80% efficentcy ( <-- typo )

OCZ is way overpriced.

the Seasonic s12s are amazing and very quiet. their larger and quieter fans make a lot of difference

a Fortron 450W at $49.99 is very powerful and can easily power that system and then some

Don't get a Modstream. They are not very good PSU's. Just get the Fortron AX500-A, which can be found for ~$70 at ewiz.

You mean the Powerstream or Modstream? I do not recommend the Modstream at all, but the Powerstream is a very nice PSU.

Ocz haters and Forton lovers lol What wrong with the OCZ it great PSU I have the 450 MODSTREAM not powerstream watt version but the 520 would be better love it

I've read 3 reviews about the Modstream and haven't found a review under a 8 and all 3 gave it there approval. Give me some reasons why a Modstream isn't good other than "They are not very good PSU's". Thanks.

OCZ is built by Topower; a decent but not a great manufacture. For the same price or less you can get a far better Seasonic or Forton.

That is a great PSU. However, what will you be powering? There are probably cheaper alternatives, but if you do go with that PSU it definitely would not be a bad purshase. Also I think the Seasonic S12 600w is around that price. If it still is, I personally would pick that over the OCZ.

I don't hate OCZ. The Powerstream 520w is a great PSU that I recommend often. However the Modstream I do not recommend. In fact I do not recommend any modular PSU as none are designed well. The closest one is the Antec Neopower, but with its poor fan choice and mounting, there are better alternatives.

The reason I do not recommend the Modstream is because it has fairly limited 12v output, and lacks both independant regulation and cross-load tolerance. Xbit did a very good test on the PSU here:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/atx-psu_11.html

As you can see from the second graph it has very poor regulation. This will result in unstable voltages under heavy load. You can also see from the colored chart it has terrible cross-load tolerance. Load on any one line severly impacts the available output on any other.

This is why the Modstream is not even close to the supply the Powerstream is. However, the Powerstream does have some flaws of its own. Look at this:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/powerful-psu_11.html

As you can see here is that it can have trouble with heavy load on the 5v. However, for most people this is not an issue. Another thing is that the Powerstreams will run rather hot when loaded heavily. This is because the 80mm fan spins just slow enough to be quiet.

The reason the Powerstreams run hot is because of their poor efficiencies ratings; a direct result of a poor design. I say skip OCZ all together and go with a proven manufacture.

Also I think the Seasonic S12 600w is around that price. If it still is, I personally would pick that over the OCZ.

Its 159 for the Seasonic and 135 for the ocz so what do ya think.......?

I recently purchased the modstream 520w and fairly happy with it. It was a difficult choice in finding the right psu and I paid for the convience of a neat and tidy psu. Honestly it was like a jungle in there with all those connectors of my antec truepower 430w that i don't even need (too bad I had no place to hide them).

Discard everything told to you and follow this:

you = wanna save some $$$ and dont plan going SLI - Get Fortron AX450 for $50

you = want SLI - Get Seasonic 500W for $120ish

END of discussion 🙂.

Or you can get a Fortron 500W Blue Storm for $91, which is the best of both worlds 🙂

good suggesstions on your part and I agree with them, just playing the devil's advocate

Yeah, for the price of that OCZ 520W listed above, you could get a much better Sparkle/Fortron/Seasonic. Or you could even get the same performance out of a ~100 PSU. There's a Sparkle 550W on Newegg with whopping 36A on the +12V and Active PFC for only like $103. The Fortron Blue Storms are also great; the cables come pre-sleeved. OCZ isn't bad, but they're too overpriced.

I got a 520w modstream for $71 after MIR. Would it have been worth it to get the seasonic for $50 more? Hell no. This PSU is more than adequate.
