Thinking of getting a LCD soon.... Need help picking one.

I want to get an LCD to save some space plus I need a new moniter so I figured I would go ahead and get an LCd while I was at it.

I would like to purchase something local from a B&M Store so I can choose from the following.

Office Max
Office Depot
Staples
Circuit City
Best Buy
Comp USA- Perfer to avoid because its close to a 100 mile round trip...

What is a good LCD that one of these stores sells that will fit my needs

I want to be able to play games on it without ghosts or anything of that sort.
I want to be able to see it from angles, I dont want to have to be perfectly straight to it..
I perfer something with built in speakers but not big builky ones that hang on the side..
Must be 17 inches or larger....
Must be sold at one of the above B&M stores...
My budget is around $500 before rebates but the cheaper the better.... 🙂

I have no knowledge of LCD terms as they are new to me, so IDK what the response times signify etc... so if you could please help me with this..

I just want something I can play games on and it look good and still be able to read text on it and use a resolution like 1024x768 or 1280x1024...

Thanks,
Josh

The size is probably going to be around 17". The cost is base on the size and most importantly the contrast ratio, meaning the sharpness of the monitor and how bright it can display. Cost is an issue, but anything with the contrast ratio of around 600:1 is good but there's others with 800:1. I like to find one with at least 700:1 for brightness and sharpness. I believe PC Club has a no name one for a reasonable price with ratio of 800:1.

Just order the NEC 1760V-BLACK model off neweggs front page. It's only $390! THat's where I got mine, and I'm thrilled with it.

Look for 17" models with 16ms response time like the NEC 1760NX or Hitachi CML175SXW(this model has built-in speakers) etc.

Yeah, those NECs are a really nice piece of kit, don't cost the worls and most importantly have DVI 😀

hehe, actually, thats the only thing the 1760V is missing...

See if you can get the exact LCD you're buying demoed at the store. If you don't like the dead pixels, tell them you don't want it.

I have the Hitachi CML175SXW and love it 16ms response time and no Ghosting whatsoever.

Make sure it has a 16ms reponse time or you'll get Ghosting

16ms, at least 400:1 contrast ratio, go for 500:1 or more, and at least 250-300mcd (nits) of brightness. try to get DVI input, too, so you don't get the digital->analog->digital (video card's digital to analog VGA to digital LCD) conversion, but just straight digital.

All 16ms displays are 400:1, but are falsly advertised otherwise sometimes. Digital is very important from what I've heard, I still havn't decided on a monitor yet, but I've heard good things bout the Viewsonic VP171b and Hitachi CML174. Both have analog and digital inputs.

Go through Dell. You can get a killer deal on a 19" monitor. Even sometimes their 20" LCD goes down to a great price.

Samsung just announced the 173P for the USA market shipping in October. Its 17 ", 16 ms, true 16 million color, not 256,000 colors like the AU 16ms panels, and its 700:1 contrast ratio plus the slim bezel thingy or whatever. It looks like the LCD to get 😀

What stores are going to allow you to open sealed retail boxes of LCD monitors to demo and pick the one you want?

I dunno. I figure if (when?) I buy an LCD, I'll ask them to demo it, and if they say no, threaten to go somewhere else. Worst case they'll say no.

Any store that wants your business?

Not many seem to in that case lmao

Ok i guess they don't care that LCD in store at office depot, you can only order it off their website, all they carry at the store for LCD's is cheap junk for the most part.
