Anyone know what typically goes out on a Suburban or Tahoe from this era?

the one I'm looking at is a 1995 GMC Suburban, 5.7L, 112,000 miles for ~$8000

I just need something that can haul the kids + accessories and pound snow drifts. Minivans just aren't cutting it anymore space wise

How many kids do you haul?

Heck...two used Accord Wagons would hold more and driving both would still cost less in fuel ;)

i dunno much about suburbans, but 112k miles on a domestic car, going for a high(?) $8000 doesn't sound all that great to me...

then again, i've been fortunate to never have to buy a used car yet (though unfortunately that means i've been stuck with econo-boxes)

I'd drive it till the motor fails. IIRC it has a 700R4 tranny which is pretty strong. Replace the motor with a crate motor when the motor goes.

3 kids. My wife bought them these MONDO car seats that are supposed to be uber-safe and last them quite a few years, so that kills one row. Then the baby in the middle row with a spare seat for mom to jump back and feed him and break up fights. By the time you stuff a stroller and a couple of bags of luggage in the back, the van is about ready to burst

I would think the transmission would go before the engine, as major components are concerned. I have a '94 fullsize Chevy pickup that probably has about the same drivetrain as the Suburban. The engine in my pickup is still running strong, but the tranny had to be replaced some time ago. But that was mostly due to my dad hauling something too heavy too fast. If it was taken care of, and you take care of it, it should last you quite a while. My truck has well over 200k miles.

112K on a Chevy truck is NOT high. 200K on a chevy is high.

But 8K is kinda a little high. Is it 4wd?

But if in Excellent condition a 4wd is around 7800, 2wd 6700. That is a GENERAL price. If it is a 4wd LT edition with leather then the price is not bad.

But there is nothing major that has gone wrong with them. They may need front pads a little more often depending on carry weight and driving habits. But if it has been maintained juts get the Diff. and trans checked out and see what you can do.

Hell I bought a used blazer with 131,000 miles... my dad bought a used intrepid with 171,000 miles, and he also bought a used park avenue with 208,000 miles...

so far we haven't had any problems with any of them...

If minivans doesn't have enough room, get a full size van like the hotel shuttle.

that's about the only vehicle that handles worse than an SUV...I'm open to it if the right one comes along, though

Most important thing you can do is install an automatic transmission cooler and flush and fill the tans with new fluid.

Have you looked at other minivans? Like a used Odyssey?

had an Ody before the Olds, not a whole lot bigger (a little yes)
plus, you're stupid to buy a used one when the new ones hold their value so well (an oddity in the auto world)

Not that hard, BUT the Sub. might already have one. If not then it is a good investment for a large truck like that, as heat is the number one killer of trans.
