thinking of getting a DSLR...

My P&S broke several months ago and I've been thinking that I'd like to get more into photography, so perhaps now's the time to get one of these.

I was browsing CL and I came across this a guy that's selling:
-Canon 300D kit (kit lens / strap / batteries etc)
-ef 80-200 lens
-battery grip
-1gb CF card
-camera bag

Has 15k actuations, no warranty and he sells it for $850 CAD ($740US). Assuming the camera is in good condition, is this a good deal? Seems to me that with all the little extras (grip, CF card, bag) $800 ($700US) would be a good price...

I'm not a big fan of the 300D. I myself have a 350D, but some of my photographer friends have the 300D and one thing that I really don't like about it is that it takes forever to review pictures. Also, it takes a while to start up. The 350D, on the other hand, has a fast startup and reviewing pictures is a breeze. I think it's because of the DiG!C II that's in the 350 and not the 300.

The 300D is extremely slow writing to card and previewing on the LCD. Tried one at a fashion show and it was frustrating to say the least. Consider a 350D or D50/D70 (lots on the used market).

Well...it's not a bad camera but I would look at the 350D (Digital Rebel XT). That 80-200mm is not a Canon lens (they don't make one in that range) so I wouldn't really want that. Depends on what brand it is.

bad deal I think

the 300d is an old camera, 350d is the latest in the same line and within a few months they will release the 400d, at that point the used 300d's will fall in price and so will the 350d

Last month I got this one.

There are two kit versions too, $800-900, depending on what company you get it from and what lens are packaged with it.

No kit is about $600 - 700.

You can get a new Nikon D50, 18-55mm AF-S DX lens, 2nd battery, bag, strap, fast 1GB SD card, and a warranty for around $660-ish, shipped to Canada.

That price sounds awful low, even for Canada. You can get the D50 kit with the 18-55 for $599 at Amazon/Adorama right now, a quick 1GB SD card will run you around $60-$70, a bag at cheapest maybe around $20, a 2nd battery atleast $20 for the cheap ones, and an extra warranty would be a little more.

This is closer to $688 shipped to Canada, shipped from NY.

You can get it for less if you shop around and get a better deal on the 1GB SD card. Unfortunately, shipping to Canada may mean customs/duties.
