gsxr 600 or 750. have only ridden dirt bikes before.

i rather not kill myself in the first week i have this bike, so does anyone have any tips or recommendations for bikes or riding in general?

You might wanna start off with an older bike in case you wreck it...you'd be a little pissed if you crashed your brand new bike

yeah dont get that bike.

even though you have riden dirt bikes they are nothing like a crotch rocket.

Hmm, a gixer is probably not your best bet. There have been quite a few threads on this topic but I'll say it again...

Get a cheap bike you don't mind wrecking because you will dump it at least once.
The MSF course never hurts to take.
A good set of leathers, boots, and a good helmet are your friends. Jeans and sneakers do not count.
Every car is actively trying to kill you. Keep that in mind and you'll be better off.
Join a good bike forum for even more good advice. I recommend sportbikes.net.
Have fun but most importantly be careful.

600 is enough power for most people. I have a GSX600 and find it's more then enough to scoot wherever I want. I would recommend getting a junker so you can get used to the roads first.

I have a feeling we will se more of these threads in the near future.

with that darn movie "torque" comeing out. we will see a bunch of guys wanting these powerfull bikes. then trying to do stuff and getting hurt. sigh.

Motorcycle consumer news is an OK rag. It carries no advertizing, so its pretty stright.

Your best bet is to start off with a used 500cc twin, a Suzi or Kaw. That the bike fits your size, has servicable chain and tires. Dress for the fall and your less likly to have it.
Take a MSF course and do not make a bike your primary mode of transportation.
Leave your ego at home when you ride......😉

What he said.

I have been riding a long time, and what I have seen is that people who live through the experience are poorer rider for it. It is hard to ride something well that you fear, and chances are you will be scared of either if it your first road bike.

thats what i thought when Biker Boyz came out... but i guess the phase goes away after they get shaken up... 😀

Well, my friend bought a big bike like that after only riding dirt bikes. He'll be in a Halo for about 6 more months, so I seriously suggest you get something smaller and learn to ride a street bike better for awhile. Good luck.

Heh I'd love to own one of those monster bikes but I also live in NYC...so as tempting as it would be, I get the feeling that buying that bike would be much like buying myself a death sentence. Oh well
