Thinking of getting a 360, worth it if I don't currently have a HDTV?

The subject pretty much sums it up. I've been thinking about getting a 360 for a while and while I'm not one of the folks that thinks that graphics are everything I have to wonder if I'll see a difference on my SDTV. Or for that matter if the games would be worth the switch from just a plain XBox. So would I see a difference graphics wise and/or is the selection in games worth paying the cash?

Well, if you say that graphics aren't everything, then you answered your own question.

As long as you have a component in on your TV, it'll look great.

Pros:
- Even at 480i the 360 can put a lot more visual effects into a game
- Soon there won't be many/any new xbox1 games as it dies off

Con:
- if you're renting, you can still get good new xbox1 games for awhile longer
- backwards compatibility is still awful and Microsoft has stopped caring so if any xbox1 games you like aren't on the BC list you'll need to keep your xbox1 anyway
- sometime next year the 360 will be revised to run cooler, and may include a bigger hard drive and/or a HD-DVD drive.

this is the answer i always give when people ask this question.
first and foremost, DO NOT get a 360 without having broadband.
i would also caution against getting one if you dont plan on getting Xbox Live
and if you have friends that are on live that is a plus

Live is what makes xbox great, and that is why it will win the console war. Nothing nintendo and sony will make can compare. my buddy didnt buy a single game for 3 months after getting his 360 and spent like ~30 bucks on live and was content.

so to recap

get 360 if you plan on getting live, otherwise stick to whats cheapest for you

why not pick up a VGA cable for the 360 and simply play it on a old CRT or TFT most if not all TFT's have VGA inputs

thats what i do, its abit of a PITA, and i had to buy a gender changer to hook the 360 to my old CRT (because it had a built in cable and male plugs dont fit into male plugs) but it works and looks great.

i will eventually get a new TFT with a few inputs so i can have all my kit plugged in at once, and also a wifi adapter or something so that i never have to swap loads of cables every time i play the 360

I'm completely happy without xbox live. it's a great system even without it.

I have Live, but I rarely use it anymore. Live is a GREAT addition for those that want online play, but the system isn't worthless without it.

That said, what size is your TV, nsafreak?

while this might be true, its like going from coach to first class
coach is good, and i love coach, but now that i have flown first class
ill never go back, ill send you a free 3 month trial, 20 bucks says you will end up signing up for a year. for a moderate-serious gamer, its a must

Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas. You shouldn't need more incentive then these two games to buy an Xbox 360. :)

I have a Silver account and I occasionally download demos and other free content, and I absolutely don't miss the Gold features when my free trial ran out. Of course, I'm not a big multiplayer person, unless it's LANning or split-screen.

i guess you could get by with a silver account, i never had one so i dont really know the limitations, but still, an active connection to the internet is a must, can we agree on this?

I use live every single day. The system is wonderful and improves at a constant pace.

i think I had a trial for a silver account, but I'll gladly try your free 3 month gold trial.

depends on your SD TV.... I only have an SD although a very pricy one.. it has a componant input that lets me use the 360s HD cables instead of composite which helps alot for clearness even on games with the smaller text like dead rising and lost planet I can read them just fine..

games look fine and I'm in no hurry to blow 2k on a nice TV in the same size class..

so yes its just fine on SD TVs...

(word of note though plugged into another TV in the house with just the composite red/white yellow and the text and graphics looked pretty bad... so its very important to have a good input)

um youre paying 60 bucks per game then for less than 20% of what the games have to offer then.. 99% of the games out there have more on the mutiplayer side of the game than the single..

youre just robbing yourself of content..

LIVE is a must have for 50 bucks a year.. there is no reason not to get it..

Thanks for the advice folks. For reference I have a Samsung 27" TV with component inputs so I'll make sure I hook up the 360 via those inputs when I do get one. I also have a home theater receiver, does the XBox have a Dolby Digital output with its default set of cables that come with the Premium pack or not?

yes it does.. it only has a optical output though... so hopefully you have a free one on your reciever.

If graphics aren't all the important to you, get a Wii and a few games/controllers for the price of a 360. Plus it is much more fun. My roommates both have 360s and I just got a Wii, I hardly get to play the damn thing.

Silver accounts can't go any multiplayer-ish things with games. No playing with other people or spectating. I haven't tried to actually put points on it and purchase any pay content so I don't know if you can.

And, OK, I'll agree with you that an internet connection is almost a requirement ;)

Cause $50 a year is a ****** rip off, THAT in its self is a reason not to get XBlive... Maybe when they reduce it to $10 a year, I'll get it... There are plenty of online services that are free, there is no reason for it to cost $50 a year, god damn ripoff...

50 bucks a year for 365 days of lag free multiplayer bliss is not a ripoff.. thats like less than i spend per day on sodas.. break it down to a daily fee... and youll realize its nothing.

Get the TV first. Here's why

Dead Rising's text is unreadable on a SDTV. You NEED a HDTV to play the game. Everyone's response to complaints about this issue was "You have a HD system, you need a HDTV to play with the system, deal with it." It's expected that this trend can only possibly continue.
