Thinking of getting a 30GB Ipod Video

My 5GB H10 is too small for my taste now so I'm in the market for a new mp3 player. I'm interested in video playback and it really limits my choices. The only two that seems like good candidates are the Ipod Video and teh Zen Vision M.

From this picture, http://www.everythingusb.com/images/list/creativevisionsize.jpg , it seems like the Ipod video is significantly smaller and the price is about the same. If I get one I'll probably get this case as well as add some PDA screen protector film to the top part.

Anyone know of an alternative that's priced about the same and as small as the ipod? Oh and as far as warranties go, does any retailer or apple itself offer a comprehensive one that lets me replace it if it gets broken regardless of the reasoN?

Edit: just bought a 30gb 5g ipod. Pretty slick and so thin. Can't believe they're able to pack 30gbs of storage in there. Looking up mods now. Probably gonna d/l a new theme. Good times

the ipod bandwagon isn't all bad. they really are a great mp3 player, i think the only reason people bash them is because everyone and their dog has one

of course thats just me, i could be wrong.

Any particular reason? Seems like it's just bigger without any better

I heard it has fm radio, mic, and it plays xvid, divx and a few other formats

hmm the xvid/divx thing might be a big deal. No new firmware for apple that allows new formats to be added? The radio and mic aren't very useful for me

I suppose it is possible, but who knows

dont plan on such a "update" being released... that would take away from apples h264/mpeg4 and quicktime/itunes.

if i was buying today i would most likely be going after a creative as well (had a ipod 30g and it was a good device but sold it to help buy an xbox360). One thing the creative has over the ipod imo is the buttons are backlit. The ipod video isnt very userfriendly in the dark (even though its not in the dark much), and from the pictures i have seen the creative is backlit.

Apple does have the music store going for it though... although I personally didnt buy a single song from it.

Obviously you don't use an ipod much in the dark? There are 5 buttons, all on one scroll wheel, not difficult at all.

spend the extra 100 bucks and double your capacity to 60 gigs. If you can't fill it up with that much music you can always put porn on it.

I'm selling my ipod video FOR a creative zen vision M... lol :)...

Still a few kinks with the ipod video, and its been about 2 months since they've released an update for the ipod video...

But for the zen vision m... The fact it supports more video formats than the ipod video takes the cake... I really hate converting my files into mp4's, and part of the time the avi files have to be re-encoded into avi again because of some minor error. Really annoying... Also on the zen vision m, fm recorder, microphone, PASSWORD PROTECTION (screw you fools who try and look at my pr0n :laugh;), and other stuff with the 4 hr battery life on videos!!!!

I don't have an Ipod Video or Creative anything. All I had was the iPod 3rd Generation, and 4G iPod Nano. The reason I went for iPod over Creative was the software integration. I listen to Audiobooks and podcasts alot, and ipod gives you the ability to know how many times you played a certain track, and you can resume from where you previously stopped.

Smart playlist is also one of the most important aspect of my iPod use. I have the computer automatically pick English tracks that I haven't listened to for a week that isn't spoken word or classical music into my machine everytime I sync, and it deletes all the podcasts that I'm done with, and put all the new downloaded ones on there. I connect the ipod in the morning, go put on my shoes, disconnect it and I have my songs on the go.

Not sure all that isn't available in Creative, but I'm happy with the ipod so far.

It's unforgiveable that ipods don't have FM radios.

Why would you want to listen to crappy commercial infested FM radio when you have thousands of high quality songs on your iPod? If you insist on radio on the go, get a sirius or xm portable player.

I'm getting an Ipod for my birthday as a present, which is going to be great, however had I the choice I'd get a creative. The screen from the Zen totally blows the Ipod's away. Not to mention battery life while watching video is around 4 hours as opposed to 2 to maybe 3. The Zen comes with a voice recorder, fm radio, and is compatible with xvid/dvix movies. However I don't believe that it compresses these files as you can watch them on your tv at 640X480.

When getting into size I think frankly, people are idiots. The zen is slightly thicker and heavier than a 60 gig Ipod. HOWEVER, does it really matter THAT much with a few millimeters? I think not, plus with the Zen being thicker it fits in your hand better.

The Ipod has Itunes going for it and a wide arrage of podcasts already lined up, though Creative has created Zencast recently. Oh yeah........and the Ipod has solitaire.

Either way I think you will be happy.

its not that much harder but i think most people would rather have it backlit over not having it (provided it didnt a huge battery life difference). Its also not easy to see exactly where the scroll wheel is in the dark (getting the circular motion just right when you cant see it). Given the choice I would much much rather have the ipod backlit like the creative.

Don't waste your money just to be a sheep and follow the trend. Instead, by a Dell Axim X51v or X50v, which can do almost everything a low budget lab top can do.

Im not really impressed by the ipod video, its a bitch to convert movies to mp4, Ive had it lock up a few times in the middle of videos, it scratches way too easily (dont they all)...

Seriously, its time for somethin better.

Zen did with CES best of show right?

I need radio on my iPod nano so I can hear Seinfeld at the gym. They've got like 40 plasma TVs with all the different channels on the wall, but you have to tune to their radio station to get them. So I need FM radio, not XM or Sirius. And it's ridiculous that they can make something as cool as the ipod nano but they can't be bothered to put an FM radio in it.
