Currently have a celeron 400 in a p2b mobo slightly overclocked to 450. Got 128 mb ram which i think is old school 66 sdram(got them awhile ago) currently good on the video card area with a herc prophet2 mx. I've been thinking about getting some thermal grease and a new hs/fan combo and trying to get a higher overclock. EIther tht or go out and get a higher multipler celeron + the better heat sink/fan and give that a try. Question is, i think the newer celerons will need a 370 to slot 1 coverter? also given the fact that celeron's are worse off than durons, should i even spend the cash to get a faster celeron and try overclocking or should i forget it and just play with what i've currently got?
Thanks

I would recommend getting a cel 2 566 because then you only have to get the converter card, processor, and maybe a fan. All three will only cost you about $150 (US). This way you can get a little more life out of you BX board. You could even sell the 400 and get a little cash back. Good Luck.

Should you pay the high prices.

but celeron 633 (most hit 950) $100 tops
msi 6905, the only slotket, $15
gorb $15

If you are able to work it, you can get all three for that price shipped.

I paid less thanks to onvia my 950 rig cost $112 shipped to my door.

Your ram may hold you back, may be holding you back now, dunno... If you are lucky you actually have pc100 ram, a lot of it was sold as pc66. Vendors knew it would work, and substituted as pc66 production phased out.

With that potential limitation in mind, and if you really want to proceed, a celeron2-633 is probably your best bet. At 75mhz fsb, it runs 722, and if your system can hit 100 fsb, it runs 950, maybe. Getting more out of any current Intel processor becomes very, very iffy, regardless of the multiplier.

Be sure that your motherboard is compatible with celeron-2's, flashing the bios will almost certainly be necessary. Using the msi slotket is a good idea, and a golden orb should suit your purposes, as would many other aftermarket HSF units.

Most celeron 633s do not hit 950. You only hear about those that succeed so there is a false sense of overclockability concerning this processor.

hmm in this case i'm thinking i'll probably just wait awhile and jump to the tbird+mobo+ram later down the road. Not much point in getting a new cpu for this old bx mobo when its not certain if my ram will hold out.. thanks for all the suggestions though, its appreciated
