I know of the biggy mp3 players but I was wondering if there is some small un-noticed player out there that is really worth a try. So don't bother mentioning Winamp, Musicmatch, WMP...

Wow, quick replies! I just wanted to try something different, that's all.

If you can, say why you prefer the player over the big ones out there...

I like winamp because it doesn't take (comparatively) a lot of system resources. That's all I really care about. And it's really user-optimized and has a lot of nice features.

Winamp rocks because

1) It is free
2) It doesn't take over my computer (ahem....Realplayer)
3) There are soooo many add-ons that enhance the listening experience

I've been using Winamp since my first experience with mp3's. Yes winamp "popped my cherry" so to speak. ;) Anyway, just didn't feel like changing, I tried Sonique but I didn't like the interface.

so far lava is the only one I haven't tried... I am checking out Freeamp right now. I am not sure what I am looking for in a player... I have 4500mp3's and growing so orginization is key (all legal btw). I eventually want my entire CD collection on my computer. I don't think visuals are a big deal to me, but SQ is important and so is CPU usage.

I like Winamp for the plugins. Period. No other mp3 player has the extensive range of visualization, output, mixing, etc. plugins.

To sum it all up: Geiss kicks ass, as well as crossfading output! :)

I tried to like Sonique. But, now I`m using Winamp with a cool skin. A lot less hassle.

Well I have just tried Audioactive and DigitalAMP... nothing fancy, but they seemed alright... Haven't really done very much SQ testing.

I have noticed that I am going to have problems with my setlists... I have all my albums organized so I that I open the playlist for an album (I have ~350) the songs come in the order they are on the album. I might have to stick with Sonique because I don't want to have to remake all of those lists.

Well I have tried about a dozen now... none of them seemed to match Sonique. I tried Winamp again... well slap me in the ass, I love it now! I don't know what version I used a couple years ago but it has improved a lot! It can read my Sonique playlists too! I like the memory footprint as well 1M vs. 10M.

So for all you Sonique users who ditched winamp because it sucked a couple years ago, try it again! With the EQ level the SQ was exactly the same!

Has anyone tried PCDJ

It looks like a mixing board

You can play 2 songs at once, change the tempo and volume of each seperately

It is fun to take an acapella version of a song with the instrumental and try to match them up

WPlay Pro

IMO its better than winamp, it seems as though you can hear the individual instruments rather than it all being lumped into noise via winamp.

Guess I missed out on all of those changes in Winamp between versions. ;) I've always used Winamp, probably always will. Very large assortment of skins and plugins (open dev here is great), small size and memory usage, very simple interface, and not a single bug or problem (not here anyway). I liked the way Sonique looked when I loaded it some time ago, but guess I just haven't seen much reason other than that (that's not enough) to change.

I've been down with winamp ever since MP3s were "born", back in my l33t AOL days about 4 years ago. Why mess with the best?

hmmm... after playing with winamp for a day know, I am missing one thing. A decent EQ. When I had the levels flat Sonique and Winamp sounded the same, but when I try to get winamp to sound like Sonique did with my custom EQ setting it sounds like crap :(. I can't get the EQ settings in winamp to sound like my EQ settings in Sonique. hmmm...
