i have a JVC setup currently that is long of tooth and some features are not working on my receiver. seen one listed in the for sale forum here but he will not ship it so i looked on ebay and seen that there are 2 listed. i wanted to get some opinions before i plunk down some cash on one. i did read a bunch of good reviews for it by using google and am leaning toward trying to get one of them off ebay. thank you to all that reply

How much are they going for on ebay?

I had a 1014 a few years ago. They're already up to 1018 with the current model number, so the 1014 is missing some newer connections and features. What are you going to be hooking up to it? Is Blu-ray or anything HDMI in your future? Does your display have enough HDMI inputs for all your sources?

no hdmi for me, will be hooking 2 front speakers and 2 rear for surround sound and center channel and a powered sub. my current receiver the sub output quit working and my surround speakers no longer work. so that is basically what i need. on ebay there are 2 listed that are used did not see new one

Are you sure it isn't that the receiver is just in stereo mode or something disabling the sub and surround speakers?

positive, it has switch for the sub that is either off or on plus the rear outputs are not working either

Can you try the receiver's test tones for all speakers just to make sure that doesn't work either?

Alright, just wanted to make sure the current one doesn't work for sure. There sure are a lot of buttons on that receiver for turning certain things on and off.

that is what is appealing to me for the pioneer from the reviews i have read it configures a lot on its own

You can let the receiver set things up, but it might not do such a great job. I'm sure things have improved with later iterations of MCACC, but on my 1014 the auto equalization was quite inconsistent for me. Level matching, distance settings, crossover settings, etc. should be ok for auto and you can then go back and check the settings yourself. You might have better luck than I did with the MCACC equalization as well.

If you can get a good price on it and shipping doesn't kill the deal, I think this would be a good bet.

If you got something new, you'd probably end up with something like a entry level Onkyo, Pioneer, or Sony. Those basic units wouldn't really have any useful features for you. The general quality of the 1014 should be significantly better than those units as well, so you wouldn't really be missing much getting an older unit at this pricepoint but you would be getting a more solid unit. As long as there's nothing wrong with the ebay units, I think that's a good move.
