thinking of buying Panasonic 42" Plasma EDTV for $1699 at Costco

Anybody have this TV? What are your opinions, how long do you think it'll last? 10 years? Picture quality? Any defects? From what I gather, it's very nice pic quality. I don't have cable but will mostly use it to watch dvds and normal tv. thanks

Why would you even consider a EDTV in the 1st place? You can get a true 1080P HDTV for the same amount of money.

It's the best of the 42" ED panels, much better than many 42" HD plasmas. At $1699 though, I think there are some better choices depending on your viewing conditions and source material.

10+ years is no problem. However, who knows what new technologies will be out then.

It's great for DVD and normal TV, definitely better than any 42" HD plasma set out there.

Oh yeah, I've had two of 42" ED panasonics, plus a bunch of HD ones.

cool, thanks for the info. Do you know if prices are likely to drop soon? (like in the next 2-4 weeks)?

Yep. People like to put down ED plasmas, but if you are watching standard TV or DVDs, they are GREAT. Especially the 42" Panasonic. But you can find it cheaper here. 😉 That's the one I'm getting for my bedroom at least.

I dunno - we have this very set at my office and it looks like crap IMO. Even HD plasma sets have too much screen-door effect for my taste, and it's almost unbearable on this ED set. We are feeding it an SD digital signal and it looks blurry and over-aliased at the same time.

..it's not hdtv?? they have it on display as you walk in the door and it looks good. everybody's pyled up at the front entrance looking at it. I thought it was hdtv?? 😕

Panasonic makes a great EDTV. I was debating between the ED and HD version when I got my Plasma and I went with HD. Only because of the distance that I sit from the set. But the picture quality from the ED made the decision very hard.

Oh, and I play hours and hours of Oblivion on my Plasma with ZERO BURN IN. I had to add that because I know somewhere in here there is some reference to plasmas and their burn in "problems".

Almost sounds like you may have a bad set. Have you looked into it? Most people who have those ED sets seem happy.

I have a 42" Panasonic EDTV and I think it's great. As others have said for watching DVDs or standard def television it's better than my 50" Sony rear projection LCD.

I went back and forth for a long time before deciding to get the ED. The HD at the time was $1000 more and I couldn't see paying that much more for it. Also, of course you can tell a difference between ED and HD when they're sitting side by side in the store, but when you get it home it won't matter because you won't have anything to compare it to.

But if you want to know more about it, you should go to AVSForum

I also have a 42" Panny EDTV. I've had 2 other people who own HDTV's come over and tell me my TV has a better picture for DVD's and normal Directv. I've never seen their tv's to compare for myself though.

I also play BF2, NFSU2, and FEAR on it and there is no ghosting whatsoever. I have left my computer desktop on it for hours at at time and there's no burn in, no nothing. You have to be standing right on top of it to see the pixelation as well.

Panny makes excellent plasmas.

what about the 42 inch Vizio plasma they have at Costco, i think it was like 1700? Supposed to be an excellent set...

Plus it wouldn't have the acronym for impotence in its title.
