My gf bought a newer Passat and is not to thrilled having to pump the expensive premium fuel into it. especially with gas prices as high as they are.

I really like the Passat, it's a more fun to drive than the Accord and looks better, which isn't hard to accomplish, but it's tough to beat the reliability of a Honda.

In most place the difference between 87 and 91 is $.20, so over a tank of gas it costs an extra $3.70. Assuming you fillup once a week (which is somewhat high considering it averages 27.5MPG with an 18.5Gal tank) we are talking about less than $200 a year extra.

Well there's your problem!

Seriously, for that money go with the Subaru Legacy GT Limited. The 06's can be had for about $25K, 250HP turbo 2.5L H-4 5-speed manual or automatic, 20/26 MPG, and will be running perfectly long after that VW. Oh, and AWD!

Mostly hype.

I have a 99 Passat GLX and it's been flawless.

Meh.

Sometimes it isn't about performance. The LGT is a very nice car no doubt. But it's not as roomy, not as comfortable, and not as refined as a Passat. A 2.0T Passat can also pretty easily pull 25MPG in town and 32+ on the highway. Quite an improvement over the Soobie.

Saftey wise, I'd say they are both about equal. Reliablity wise the Subaru will win out. Performance wise the Subaru has the Passat (but not by much when we talk auto-trans).

If it were my money to spend, I'd take the quirks of the Passat for the improved comfort, finish, and economy over the Subaru.

FWIW I was a very happy owner of a 2000 Passat that I traded in with over 98,000 miles on it. All I spent on the car was money for a couple light bulbs and routine repairs for some front end suspension work.

With the Audi you are often paying more money for a smaller car with less content for the same $$. You also are going to be looking at higher insurance premiums and repair costs.

Going used might allow you to bump up the content levels a bit, but you are still getting a much smaller vehicle. There is absolutely no comparison between the interior room of an A4 and a Passat.

Actually, it costs considerably more as we are in Canada and gas is very expensive. Probably closer to $7.00 difference between regular and premium fuel to fill the tank. She fills once every 5 days so that adds up. Either way, she wishes she would of bought a car that doesn't require premium fuel. Oh well.

dont most cars adjust to the octane level? if you consistently run a lower octane wouldnt it adjust?

sure it would be a waste of the engine on the car but if you really wanted to save the moeny.

The ECU should retard timing, but from what I hear it kills your mileage while you're at it. Just put premium in and stop bitching :p

My sister owned an unfixable Jetta, biggest piece of sh!t I have ever been a witness to. With VW, it seems you either have a lot of problems or hardy any at all.
