Thinking of buying an '06 VW Passat

Anyone have experience with this car? I'm looking at a 2.0T model in Blue Graphite with 'Package 1' (chrome trim, power seats, moonroof, upgraded stereo) and I went to test drive it today. Its not very quick off the line, but it feels better than a Camry or Accord. The 6-speed tranny felt butter-smooth and I like that it has a sport mode and Tiptronic option.

Anyways, the MSRP is $27k but the dealer's giving $3500 off to make room for the '07 model. Not a bad deal as far as VWs go I guess. I might pick it up tomorrow. Any good reason why I shouldn't?

Update: I went back today, started the paperwork, got a good financing rate, finalized the deal, and just drove it home! My dad was a BIG help in walking me through everything. After putting some money down and taking a 4 year deal vs. 3 years, my payments work out to $540--not too shabby.

PICS COMING SOON!!!

I drove the 2006 version and drove great. As usual, the Passat (V6 version, stick) trounces the Accord and Camry in drivability. My wife and I couldn't believe the difference. It was true when I was in the market in 2001 when I tested all three and is still true. To this day, my Passat GTX drives and looks like new with minor repairs.

I think the price you can get the Passat is a bargain. Consumer Reports put that '06 model at the very top (as usual) of their list in overall goodness. Reliability is yet undecided as its first year (as with all cars)...

The Passat engine is smooth. The transmission/shifter is fantastic. The fit/finish/materials/ergonomics is better than most rivals in the class.

The electronics should come with at least 100,000K mile warranty, it's the main reason from us every getting another VW again.

If it means anything, I love the way my '99 Passat drives.

The newer 2.0T engine seems pretty cool. If you ever decide to chip it, you'll get a ~50HP/75lb-ft increase, for ~$600.

I've read that the gains aren't that impressive. Most of what's out there says that the engine actually makes about 225hp stock so you're only gaining about 25hp. I don't doubt that claim as the 2.0T feels MUCH stronger than the 1.8T.

It's kind of a toss up. The 06's have some quirks that need to be worked out (really bad reports of weak A/C), some electrical quicks (It's a VW), and really, really crappy cupholders :p (that can be fixed for $60 and 2-3 hours of work)

The 07's have addressed those but at the cost of some content loss. I think they dropped the cooled armrest and some of the "soft touch" interior was reduced. Plus you don't have as much negotiating room as you do with an '06.

The nice thing about the '07's is that you are *supposed* to get a bit more freedom in choosing the options/packages. I think with the 07 2.0T's you can get the sport package and the HID's. That isn't offered on the '06's.

For the same money I'd encourage you to at least test drive a Jetta GLI with the DSG. Can't get them in Blue though.

I think it really depends on the transmission. The DSG's in the Jetta's and GTI's seem to be really limiting the benefit of a chip. The 6MT's seem to benefit a bit more. Regardless though, it's not quite the same as the chip gains on the old 1.8T. The 2.0T comes pretty spunky right out of the box.

That's what I'm saying. My wife had a 02 1.8T and now has a 06 2.0T and the differences are spectacular. One difference that I haven't accounted for is that the 1.8T was a 5 speed auto and the 2.0T is a DSG however I still think it feels like way more than 200hp. I looked at the result of a dyno on a GLI and it hit 225hp without any modifications.

You're buying one of the worst brands in terms of reliability. You will get to know your service advisor on a first name basis.

So is APR lying then? They posted a Dyno graph..but I guess they could just have easily altered it.

Back when the car was purchased I had some better info. This is the best link I can find now.

Tapas, hahahhaa. Actually, if you are in fact interested in tapas, theres a neat restaurant that just opened up a little while ago at the Baltimore Harbor. I forget the name of it, but they have great tapas.

i have a 2k4 passat 1.8T
the fit and finish of the 2k4 is better than the 2k6

after test driving the 2.0T i wasn't very impressed
i'm sure if i drove the v6 version that would change but if the fit and finish were the same id say no

i personally will not buy a vw after this car
i'm looking at more upscale vehicles from here out

This the same 2.0T in the A4? Can it also be chipped?
