Thinking of buying a portable DVD player.

I am flying to Maui from SoCal in September with my 2 Y/O son so I thought it would be a good idea to take some of his favorite movies to watch on the plane and in our hotel room before bedtime.

I want something small and lightweight with a decent viewing screen and long battery life.

I haven't been impressed with what I've seen. Typical price is $250+ for something with barely enough battery life to make it through most movies. Forget longer movies like any of the Lord of the Rings. You can go a bit cheaper on sale or with 5" screens.

If you didn't mind a larger size, a used laptop can run the same price, play DVDs just fine, and give you a whole lot more (games, productivity, etc).

I have a laptop but the battery only lasts about 20 minutes and it doesn't have a DVD drive. I don't know how well a 600MHz Celeron with 192MB RAM would play DVD movies quite frankly. Besides, a laptop is much bulkier than a portable DVD player.
