Thinking of buying a car

I am thinking of buying a 08 Hyundai Sonata Limited (2.4L, 4cyl). Any Sonata owners want to share their experiences?

Also, is a $21,000 OTD (incl. tax, title, registration, delivery) a good price?

MSRP for the 08 Sonata LTD is $22,400, Invoice is around $21,000. So the price you are getting is pretty good. However, you could save by getting a 2007 model, since the invoice on the 2007 LTD V6 is about the same as for the 4-cyl LTD (2008 model).

In that price range, you might also want to consider the 2008 Accord LX-Premium, which is a bit more powerful and gets slightly better MPG due to its 5-sp auto vs the Hyundai's 4spd. The Nissan Altima is another choice you may want to consider.

Hardly any 07's left in the area 🙁

I did look at Accord, but feature to feature Sonata was a much better deal. I want leather seats and getting them on Accord pushes the price beyond my budget..

I haven't looked at Altima though...

I think you're in an interesting dilema.

Hyundai hit a homerun with the current Sonata. But......there are a couple problems now.

Toyota and Honda were on previous gen models before, but not anymore.

And they both kept the price points respectable.

Now, are the Sonata, Camry and Accord near par for their respected price/value???

Hyundai is coming with a new Sonata in March...So 08 will lose value faster (not that Sonata's hold value well)... But again if I try to get the same features in Accord, it will be at least $3,000 more...

Car buying is a pain in the _____

Well, I am not a fan of Hyundai at all, even though I am Korean. (I became anti-Hyundai while I drove 99 Sonata for 8 years 😛) But the price seems ok, especially if you are not going to trade-in your car at least for five years or more. I'd honestly, however, go for 07 Camry or 08 Accord rather than Sonata, because I usually want to get a new (used 😛) car every three years. But if you are not like me and want to drive your car more than 5 years, Sonata is ok.

Whatever Hyundai lacks in comparison to Honda & Toyota (if anything) they more than make up on with their outstanding warranty. If price is your only reason for looking at the 4 cylinder I would defiantly consider looking around for a 2007 V6. If you haven't test driven the V6 I suggest you do. I agree with 996GT2 that you sould be able to get the 2007 V6 at near the same price if not lower. Good luck.

My biggest issue is that there are a billion used '06 and '07 SE's/GLS's out there with V6 engines and leather for around $15,000.

You are paying a $5,000 premium for new with a weaker engine.

Yeah, I totally forgot to say that when I wrote my first comment. Why don't you consider a year or two old used one? Hyundai's resale value is really crap, and you will be able to find one for really cheap. For instance, I could find a lot of '06~'07 V6 (May not be limited though) for around 16k OTD.

Only car brand you should consider buying new is Toyota and Honda.

How much more is the 6 cylinder. I had a 6 cylinder 2006 sonata as a rental once, and I was impressed with the power.

V-6 will be around $1000 more (I am assuming based on the MSRP)..

I wasn't too interested in the V-6 because I don't really need the extra power.... But, I haven't driven the V-6..

Is the bumper to bumper and powertrain warranty transferable?

Also, as far as I know, leather comes only in the Limited version. I did look around for the used Limiteds and for the prices they were quoting I could walk out with a new one.

Which websites do you recommend for searching for used hyundai. So far I had been using craigslist, cars.com, autotrader...

No, the bumper to bumper warranty and powertrain warranty get hacked!!!

(down to 60K, I believe)

Only exception is a sale to family member.

Otherwise, that *would* be a good choice. (Notice Suzuki's latest push on their now *transferable* warranty????)

I just wanted to ammend some earlier comments I made. I have an '08 Sonata as a rental for work.

It's the base 4 cylinder but I'm am thrilled with the way this little motor runs. Smooth and deceptively quick. I was scared when they handed me the keys. But after putting a few miles on it i'm very impressed.

Definitely one of the best 4 bangers I've been behind the wheel of.

If I was to buy one, I don't think I really need the 6.

I don't know where you live, but can you get out to California during a big car sale weekend?

For ?4th of July? Burt Browning or some hyundai dealer in Orange County was offering 07 Sonata LEs for 12,990. A couple weeks/a month later, they offered them for 14,990. If you can afford the time (and can choose the right moment to come out) you'll be spending a few grand less on the vehicle, even with transportation back home tacked on. (general estimation for OTD is about 11% on a new vehicle)

I live in NJ, so it won't work out for me. Thanks anyway.
