As the title says, I'm thinking of buying a cable modem. Is there any where I can find reviews on these things?

Here's a list of modems "approved" by AT&T@home:

List of Approved Modems

I currently am renting the GI/Motorola SB 3100 and am happy with it, I think. I get great speeds and pings right now.

Thanks guys :)

I wish they offered AT&T @Home cable in my area but I'm stuck with QWest 640k DSL for now. Sorry wish I could help you out. I have seen several great deals on Toshiba cable modems though in the Hot Deals forum. Even though you're impartial to the Motorola it may help out to keep an eye on the Hot Deals forum.

Well, it appears the SB 3100 is discontinued and has been replaced with the SB 4100... which is NOT on the list of approved modems. Go figure. The SB4100 does have a neat feature though, a "kill switch" that stops all data transmission so you can "turn off" your connection while away from the computer. A neat security feature, if you ask me. I wonder if the new model will work, even though it's not on their list?

It really doesn't matter. They all perform about the same and will be limited by your neighborhood network anyway. I have the RCA 235 which I got for a deal from comcast for $99 which inlcuded the free installation kit, the modem itself, a free linksys nic, and one month free. :) I would just get the one from them or whichever is cheapest on the approved list. But there are so many deals around now you would be crazy to pay $8-10 a month to rent one.

From the research I did earlier there is not that much difference between cable modems. I am using the Motatola SB3100 and it works well for me.

ZoneAlarm can lock all transmissions and is worth having if you are on an always on connection.

i just wonder if these new DOCSIS modems can be uncapped like the older ones...i had a non-DOCSIS compliant motorola cybersurfer and it sucked

If you move a lot (like me), don't buy a modem. I have a 3Com modem I've been dragging along for awhile now, and it hasn't worked with my last two cable modem providers (though it's ALLEGEDLY DOCSIS compliant -- go figure).

Since I'll be here less than a year, I'm just renting my Toshiba.

Oh, and COX COMMUNICATIONS SUCKS! Had to say it. :D
