Thinking of asking for a PC here at work

I've been brining my girlfriend's old, beat up, bearly workable Inspiron 4000 here to work to use because the workstation that was given to me has a ton of crap loaded on it and it's on a CRT (hard on the eyes). We're a Dell reseller and get a discount, so I'm thinking of dropping a hint to management to see "if there's any computers laying around that may be better" (ie, possibly ordering something for me in the works of a new PC and/or new LCD).

There IS a workstation for me, but we're talking an old P3 running Win2K with a 17" CRT.

What should I ask for? Appropriate/inappropriate to ask?

I just got an upgrade at work. Dell Pentium D w/2 gigs of RAM and a 19 inch LCD.

Psssh, but I need teh XP! The other guy who is on salary (most are hourly) has a 20" 1600x1200 LCD with a new Dell P4 with XP... he's going to work PART-TIME now getting another job and he'll probably keep that PC.

So yeah, being the "other" guy on salary I deserve something similar.

At work they just upgraded 66 machines from 512MB PC2700 to 2GB PC3200 (1GB Stickx2) in dual channel.

Pity they're still using HT Enabled Pentiums.

I'll be doing some PHP, have multiple router config screens open at once, and remote desktop for about 30 different Linux/W2K3 servers, domain controllers, etc.

Another guy who doesn't work here anymore has dual LCDs, a full office, and doesn't even work here anymore. It's like a gravestone that nobody can walk around or something.

Well if that PC is available, it seems reasonable to request it, but I've done all the stuff you're talking about on a P3 733 with 256MB and a 17", and it was certainly enough machine to handle that.

What's wrong with a P3 running Windows 2000? Just wipe it clean and reset it to the defaults and you're good to go. No need for anything more than that for what you're doing.
