Thinking of a rheostat baybus, anybody have one?

I'm considering building a rheostat fan controller. I was wondering if anybody has one or has had experience with one. I can figure out the wiring but i was wondering if a rheostat would lower the life of a fan. Also, where is the best place to attach a thermocouple on a CPU? If you stuck it right on the CPU core wouldn't that make a gap between the heatsink and except for the thermalcouple? My other option is a 12v/7v baybus but i was wondering if using the 5v as a ground would affect other components. That was suggested by an engineer that i know (My father). Anybody with any info on that please drop me a line.
 
A thermocouple(the hyperaccurate thermistor, right?) should be placed as close to teh core, but not between core and heatsink. Depending on how thick it is, try next to cpu substrate, touching the edge of cpu core. Then try to isolate it so the only measurement's that the thermocouple is getting is from touching the core.

And I haven't noticed any fan degradation with my rheostat baybus yet... i've only been using it for 4 months, though.

wiring is pretty simple. Cut into one of the wires running to the fan, doesn't really matter which. You then attach the rheostat in there. Of course, you'll want to mount the rheostat in a place where it looks nice but that's about it. Rheostats are much simpler to wire than a dual voltage baybus. If you want a LED to light up when you turn on the rheostat, that's much harder, and i have no clue how to do it. Also, i'm thinking of taking a voltometer and then calibrating the rheostats (Putting little lines on the outside for how many volts are going to the fan). It may take a little longer but it would be the best.
