Thinking if trading in or selling.

I'm trying to decide if I want to trade in my car or try to sell it myself. I have a 2004 mustang mach 1 with a p1sc pro charger, it has 29,000 miles and it's in excellent condition. What I want to know is how much should I expect a dealer to offer? I'm looking at trying to get a 2008 Acura TL, mostly for better fuel efficiency and seating. Would I be a fool to try and trade? Should I sell it personally?

You'll be lucky if the dealer gives you market price for a stock GT.

You need to sell that privately. I would try using Stangnet or the Corral or some other Mustang site...your listing will actually be seen by people looking for that type of thing.

Depends on where you are, but generally here's how it works:

1. You are going to get kbb trade-in on your car. They don't give a rip about the upgrades. You will get the amount up front for trade-in, in which case you may only have to pay taxes on the difference, depending on how taxes work where you live.
2. If you sell the car you will get more money (possibly by a good bit) but it will take longer to get, depending on how cars are selling in your area.

When in this situation in the past, I look on Auto Trader and see what a similar car is going for, then take it to the dealership and see what they are prepared to give me for it. Those numbers are a good help for me making that decision.

God luck! If I had the money, based on your description, I would pick it up in a heartbeat! I enjoyed my last two Mustangs very much.

Aside from the general norms, he is talking about (AFAIK) the second most powerful Mustang of that era, behind the factory-supercharged Cobras. And it's the last MY, and it has ~30k on it.

All of those things mean jack crap to your average dealer, but are going to up the value to enthusiasts.

Might be a tough sell with the Procharger, though. I doubt it will really add much value; the question is will it take away from what otherwise seems like an 'old lady' (sorry, best term I can think of. 😉) car in very good shape?

Not to seem too conniving, but I might consider putting the stock parts back on, selling the SC kit, and never acknowledging its existence. :ninja:

Is it a centrifugal SC? Does it maintain the stock scoop setup?

Yeah this is what I was thinking, I'd really like to get every dollar out of it I can but I don't want to sit it out and wait for a call. I know the upgrades don't increase value whatsoever, I figured it would decrease it if anything. It's hard to find a car with similar mileage in my area but I'll continue looking. The acura I'm looking at is ~17k so I'm hoping I can talk the guy down to 16k and pay most of that with the trade in. I really don't want monthly payments for an extended time.

Well, here's a cherry Mach1:

Here's one with over double your miles:

eBay isn't the greatest guide, but it gives you an idea. If your car is aestetically near-perfect, I could see it getting 15-16k, or even a little more.

I bought the car for 17k when it had 14kiles on it. The numbers look promising on eBay but who knows. The car has been garage kept for the year and a half I've owned it.

The numbers look fairly good, a dealer would probably try to offer ~12-13k, so it looks like I might just have to sell her the old fashioned way. It'd just be simpler to trade into the place I'm going to be buying from. I'm gonna miss driving my baby 🙁

private sale is probably better, dealers can low-ball sellers because many will give in for the convenience of not having to sell it, on a car like that probably even more.
Decide what the difference in price is worth to you.

Craiglist ad is free. Just wait it out. If your car is good and priced right someone will come along. The difference could be 5k or more compared to what the dealer gives you. I sold a truck to the dealership because I got damn near blue book value without any hassle. I didn't even bother trying a trade in on my 90 Mustang when I bought my new Honda. I'm selling it myself. Main thing is to not get in a rush. I have no problem waiting it out until I get my price.

I think privately selling it would yield the best results. Does anyone know how reliable a 2008 Acura TL would be? From what I've read those models are nearly bulletproof.

I have a 2006 TL. Its been bulletproof. Only thing to watch for for is the auto trans needs a pressure switch changed every 50k or so. Its cheap to do and I know the later models like the 08 had less issues. If you get an auto and don't know the history that's one of the first things I would do.

Private party. Its a bit of a pain - just be sure to take steps to do it safely.

When I sold my Camaro, everyone wanted to get the car for nothing because it was modded. A friend told me to listed it like it was stock and I got about 20x the interest in it, but as soon as people realized it was modded, they wanted me to remove the mods and sell it for even less. Unless you find that one person that wants the car like you have it, everyone will either nickle and dime you, want you to demod or change it in some way to suit what they want or they'll want it for nothing since "they'll have to change it anyway".

I liked phucheneh's idea. If you can, take the mods off the car. Since they only did that one for 2 years, Mustang fans will jump on the collector aspect of it. And those are the people who will give you the best money for it, since you already have taken care of the hard part with low mileage.
