right now im running a X300SE, so i definitely need something to play games with.

im thinking bout the 7600GT since its bout 150-170, plus from what i read its faster than a 6800GT. And I also read the ATi cards in this price range doesn't support SM3.0 or HDR. so i think its the logical choice.

but nvidia might have some new 7 series cards coming out?

yay or nay?

depending on what u do with your card will depend on what u should get

6600GT ~= 7800GS

6800GT ~= 7600GT

go for the 7600GT its worth the extra dollars

the 7600GS is much slower than the GT. they're the same exact processor, and the GT is clocked 560/700, while the GS is 400/400

im in the same boat, especially since newegg has an evga 7600gt on sale this weekend for 158, plus a 10 dollar rebate making it 148. can anybody comment on how big of a jump i'll see going from an x800xl (i've asked before, but it doesnt hurt to ask again :p).

Not a lot, I guess...

7600GT is 128-bit, X800XL is 256-bit. 7600GT has 12 pipelines. X800XL has 12/16 pipelines.

Err...damn, I don't have enough evidence to support my statement. Umm...I *THINK* it's not much different.

7600gt looks a bit faster than the x800xl... and does sm3... i'm in the same boat trying to sell my xl... with a 7600gt at $150, the xl is losing value fast...

Cards in this price range have too little horsepower to put SM3 and HDR to good use. But a 7600gt offers decent performance for ~$170 with or without SM3, so for someone coming from a x300 it will be a huge upgrade. For someone with a 6800gt or a x800xl, it will be more of a sidegrade.

7600GT offers excellent performance for the price. outperforms the last generation 6600GT and i think even the 6800nu/GT/Ultra.

i would definitely get the 7600GT!

basically, any mid-range card would be good for you, coming from an X300!

*looks at aging geforce3 and pouts*

i was keen until i saw the 7600GT with AA/AF turned up against the x1800GTO :p RTPE isn't showing a X1800GTO cheaper than 194 USD right no tho...

I'm res limited so i'd want to ladle on the AA/AF, and the 7600GT rly doesn't cut it imo in that department...plus no AA+HDR...

I was looking at the one with the 1.2ns RAM and the bigger cooler when i was interested tho.

I wouldnt rely on any stock cooler to be quiet. Get the cheaper one and get a VF700.

you definitely want one with the 1.2ns RAM tho, EVGA i think sells a 7600GT with some massive clock speeds over the reference in Aus...

I'd say yay. It's a nice card for the price, and will be a night and day improvement over your current card. The worst performance I get out of it is in Oblivion which forces me to run at 10x7, but everything else I've no complaints.

i just put in an order for the KO edition- didnt even notice that newegg has a 20 dollar rebate for it, dropping the final price down to 159. not too shabby.

The 7600GT seems to be a great value right now. I'm thinking about replacing my 6800 256m. Is the difference in performance worth the upgrade? (Also looking at the x1800xt)

The GeCube@newegg is $185 shipped after MIR, a very good deal. Look at the troll review for it, good for a laugh. "Ati is cheating with the drivers again." Linked for laughs and nice pricing It really is a better card than the 7600GT overall, with features as added value. Avivo, performance with eye candy, particularly minimum FPS, and AA+HDR for this price are great selling points.

The XpertVision 7600GT that has the better cooler&ram sinks, uses a different PCB than all the other reference based cards, and has 1.2ns ram, is a interesting card. Unfortunately the one VR had, didn't provide a superior memory overclock@stock voltage though.

I am using a 7600GT XXX for now, and it is faster than either of my 2 EVGA 6800GS PCIe max stable overclocked were *not SLI of course*, in some titles e.g. CoD2, noticably so. Nice not having the PCIe connectors running to vid cards for a change too. 199 shipped, GRAW DVD offer, and $30 MIR, with 590/800 OOB&double lifetime warranty was too good a deal to not justify playing around with one. I will get a different brand and F around with SLI later, and that 1 I'll overvolt and see what it can do. Don't want to trash the next owners warranty on this 1.

The 6800GT=7600GT comment in this thread is false IMO. My BFG 6800GT OC would hit past ultra speeds and it was still slightly slower than a 6800GS@440/600, and the XXX is better yet, 128bit or not.

BTW, doea anyone know if ATI enabled the dongless CF for the X1800GTO yet?
