Thinking about willingly checking myself in a psychward

Been there several times for different reasons other than depression, but I'm deprssssed now so I may be more appreciative of the seting. Just trying to stick around before this happens

Do you live in the US? We don't really have psych wards anymore, we have mental health facilities usually located in major hospitals. They offer strict confinement and also a more casual environment based on the patients needs.

Just go to a well rated one.

I'm gonna try to take to wait it out a a few. I've been taking an unusually large amount of 5htp lately

I did my internship in college at a psych facility. Had some scary moments, one time I followed someone into the locked down ward because I was looking for a chart. The door automatically locked behind me, I turn around and some big hairy looking dude was staring right at me. He yelled what the fuck are you looking at! As he slowly started walking towards me. One of the nurses at the station noticed and ran out and got me out of there. He said what I did was very foolish, don't go in there again

Just don't over-do it. I bought some a month ago, but it seems I've lost mine. No fun dreams and happiness for me!

As for the psych ward, do it if you need to. If you've been there before, I'm sure you'll be able to figure out how to coerce them into freeing up a room if they try to give you the run around.

I'm going to stick to self-medicating with the good old bottle... Cheaper and less of a stigma.

My logic is telling me to wait it out a few. I took 800mg 5htp the past two days. Gonna wait this out

Don't take stuff for awhile that isn't prescribed. SSRI are effective if you haven't tried one. I've been rocking Paxil for a few years and have been happy. Shit sucked without it.

Thats interesting hearing someone who's appreciative of an ssri

There are definitely psych wards.

There are the places where people with good insurance go to get their Xanax refilled. And there are the places where they haul the homeless guy who just took a dump in the planter.

That's a fair amount.

It's not super-effective, for me, at least. I'm guessing you have a tolerance for it if you are taking that much / taking it regularly.

One alternative you could try if you are avoiding/can't afford pharmaceuticals is exercise. Of course, it's a really big pain in the ass, but it does release endorphins. I very rarely exercise (like many), and if I do it's something like jogging in place or in circles around a basement / garage (if there's room). I smoke so I can't jog for very long, so I can say that even just doing it for 5 minutes helps out every once in a while.

Establishing it as a daily routine would help, too, if you could stick with it. I'm just too damn lazy.

Another alternative would be to develop an obsession. Some people look at obsessions like a cancer, but everyone has them about something to some degree. Even something like playing an MMORPG could be considered an healthy obsession, depending on the person. Of course, it depends on your interests, but the overall point is that getting a hobby and regularly doing it could help

Do you have a psychiatrist that you meet with?

This.

Unless you're imminently thinking of hurting yourself, you probably don't need to check yourself in. But it looks like you've been a few times before and know the routine, which means you should have a regular psychiatrist you go to.

Usually the homeless are just displaced somewhere else. Like literally, physically picked up and then dropped off in a different area of the city (or someone elses city)

If they are violent, they can be taken against their will or voluntarily to a psychiatric care facility, usually at a hospital, this may last a few days and usually results in a string of pills and a requested return visit. This is usually the exact same facility that someone who suffers from severe depression/suicidal tendencies, etc. goes to get their xanax refilled (usually lie about their tendencies :sneaky: )

Or they are charged with a crime and go to jail.

At least where I am, I'm not aware of "psych wards" that house those who are just mentally ill.

I do and I see him Friday, but a part of me want to go back anyway. Well, I'll wait it out and try to make it to Friday
