Current Specs-
CPU-Amd 64 X2 4200+ 939 (stock speeds)
GPU-EVGA 7600GT (600/1600)
MOBO-Foxconn NF4SK8AA SLI (16x 16x in SLi)

so heres my question, christmas is coming up and i was thinking of either getting the 8800GT or just wating for the 8900/9800 Series cards to come out and getting one of those cards cause by then ill have enough money.

i think im pretty set on waiting for the next good nvidia refresh seeing as the 8800 Series has been out for a while and is starting to see some slow downs in some DX10 based games such as crysis and lost planet.

my birthday is at the end of january so with money from christmas and my birthday i should have enough to buy a nice new 8900GTS/9800GTS which to me sounds damn good.

i hear a lot of people who say "ohh just buy whatever is the best when you have the money" but thats not always smart. The way i see it is that nvidia just released the 8800GT at a fairly low price (200$ for a card that performs as good as a GTX when overlocked?) because they are about to release a new flagship card so the GT will become the new midrange so that they can release their new series of cards with something affordable and fairly fast (remember how long it took the midrange 8000 series cards to come out, and then it sucked?). Nvidia always does this before releasing something big, remember the 7950GT? it was only 250$ and performed at nearly 7900GTX speeds for half the price and a month after the 7950GT came the 8800 series (maybe a bit longer) but im thinking the 8900/9800 series will be out within the next two to three months, no later than Q1 2008

so what say you? should i jump on the 8800GT, or be patient and wait for the next nvidia refresh?

nvidia has really been impressing lately and im really excited to see their next big update.

PS:Im astounded at newegg for having the 8800GT at 300.00$, ive never seen them overprice hardware that much, i know its a supply and demand thing but 100$ over MSRP? thats low, even for newegg.

The 8800GT chews up and spits out all games at the moment, unless you're using gigantic displays. Go for it. Read the AT review and be convinced. Besides, the next big leap will be quite a bit away.

hmm yeah i read a few reviews of the 8800GT and its a damn good card for 200$.

maybe i will get one for christmas and a second one for my birthday, maybe then i will be able to play crysis on low @ 800x600 :p

joking aside, crysis on low looks like absolutely crap, unfortunately thats all my 7600GT could take @ 1680x1050

the difference between medium and low in crysis is huge. i will be a happy man if i can play crysis on medium @1680x1050, even happier if thats with 4xAA

Don't SLI it. Either save the cash for the future and get a single, great card when it's your birthday or get the 8800GT now and use that for something else. It's a waste of money.
