My current setup:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 (E6750)
4GB RAM DDR2
nVidia GeForce 9600 GT 512MB

I am thinking about getting myself a BFG nVidia GeForce GTX 280 OC 1GB.

You think its worth it?

I'm thinking about upgrading my 8800GT to that card. But yeah you should see a huge difference by going up to a 280 GTX...

You will probably want to OC that cpu. Like mine or more.

Worth it as in price performance or will this be a big difference? from my 3870 to my 4870 was a big difference; to give you an idea.

Until games like Crysis is smooth at the highest settings I think you should wait. Gt200 isn't worth the money.

I'm assuming with a 9600gt you aren't playing at 1920x1200+, so the 9600gt should be decent for lower resolutions for now, especially if you overclock a little. There's only a few games that really see a benefit from a stronger card, as you should still get easily playable fps with the 9600 provided you aren't playing high res and need 16xaa. And even then when you look at the benchmarks for 280s, it sure doesn't make me enthusiastic about what you're getting for the price in the games you actually need it (Crysis, Clear Sky).

I'd just suggest comparing benchmarks between the two at your monitor's resolution. If you're finding your fps are becoming unacceptable and think the jump to the gtx 280 is worth it, go for it. I'm kinda in the same boat, have the 8800gts 512 which is a bit stronger, but when I look at the 280, I can't justify spending ~$400 to make 2-3 games a little more playable at higher res when my card does everything else fine.

Mustang's suck btw :p.

I can get it for free, but it will be a small hassle. Just wondering if it will be worth the small hassle.

You're not thinking of buying a 280GTX and swapping your old card and returning it, are you?

No.

I would be buying for a friend with his insurance money, and swapping with mine to give to him. He has OK'd this, I am not ripping him off in any way. He doesn't play games or have a need for a huge graphics card....so I threw the idea out there.

So really...no hassle at all in getting it, just the time to swap cards really.

Not a lot of time... just a few minutes to install and upgrade drivers.

Go for it

So you are a scammer out to get your friend's 280GTX and downgrade it for your personal gain?
-Did he have a 280GTX originally? if so, once he really thinks about your self-serving "idea", you are probably out of luck. He could just keep his money and use IG or buy a cheap $50 after MiR videocard. Do he really want to give you money? That is what he would be doing if he ever agreed to your getting a gift from him like that.
--Not to mention the insurance company doesn't pay much anymore and they tend to depreciate even new HW extremely quickly.

:p

His current computer is about 10 years old.....he has a $3000 budget. Not scamming him at all.
