Thinking about trading my DS for a psp

I have a DS with five games. It's basically in mint condition because I hardly ever play it anymore. I was thinking about trading it for a PSP.

Any thoughts on PSP v DS? One of the big reasons I'd switch is because I think I'm going abroad for a year and I'd like to have a device with more flexibility than the DS. Someone told me the PSP has a good ebook reader and some other neat stuff.

If it isn't for games, you might be better off with an iPod Touch. Music, movies, eBook and other apps.

What PSP games do you want to play?

I have both. You can watch movies (need to convert though) and mp3s fairly easily on the PSP. You probably can too on the DS but I haven't looked into it.

You really need to be looking at what games you want to play before you make a jump from one system to another. There are what, 800 games for the PSP, but you can emulate the SNES and previous pretty well, so that's a plus for the PSP.

Don't do it! It's a trap! :Q

Keep in mind that any PSP game you buy on UMD today has automatically been turned into trash by Sony because of the decision to remove the UMD drive from the PSPGo.

How long until Sony foists digital distribution on all PSP owners by requiring all developers to release games digitally only? I give them a year from the release of the PSPGo.

Oh, and obligatory "two hundred and forty nine US dollars".

All PSPs support Memory Stick Pro Duo cards up to 8gb so it's not really that big a deal. No way I'd but the Go! though. Get a PSP-3000.

8 GB (less than that after it's formatted) memory stick will hold what...2 games, maybe 3? UMDs are basically small DVDs. So, for almost every game you buy, you'll have to buy a Memory Stick Duo just to hold the game? Tack the cost of the memory stick on top of the full MSRP you'll have to pay for the digital copy.

Total and complete fail.

Yeah I'm not sure. I don't really plan on using either that much, except on plane flights, long bus rides, or other BS. Even then, I'll probably read a book.

I'll look into what I could get if I sell my DS, I can probably use the money for something better. My buddy has an old 1st gen iphone that I could probably buy off him for <$100. It can handle PDFs, ebooks, all that jazz and can do internet stuff. Plus, I then wouldn't have to buy a GSM phone.

nah, an 8GB memory stick will usually hold 5-10 games, depending on the size of the game. A lot of the UMD based games are padded to fill the entire disc, but if you look on PSN, most of the actual PSP games are 500MB or less, with only a few reaching 1GB.

Having said that, I've had 2 PSPs, with the exception of the occasional worthwhile title like Patapon or Chains of Olympus, the system is pretty much useless for gaming. I still have my 2nd one, but I mostly use it as an MP3 player while I do the treadmill or streaming video off of my PS3 while I'm out back grilling.

i really like my psp1k. CFW 5.00 M33-6

works like a champ. i use it primary for an mp3 player (love the sleep timer), but i occasionally game on it. i've really like GoW, Patapon, Resistance, FF7:CC, R&C, Hot Shots, Syphon Filter, and a few others that I can't remember now.

What, as if they can't be copied on and off and archived on DVD/HDD? Also, nowhere near all games use the full 1.3GB. WipEout PurE was well under 300MB and it's one of the best looking games on the system with FMV and LOADS of unlockable art. What's more, the vast majority of PSP games have been "ripped" to a fraction of their original size. Me? I like to own the original and run them off of UMD for battery life reasons.

Oh! And I must mention: I VASTLY prefer my DS.

CZroe meant to say. He plays on memory stick to extend battery life...obviously.

Also, the DS can do most of that stuff if you get a card for $10 shipped from DealExtreme. All the homebrew apps you want on a microSD card, or even your entire DS collection consolidated. E-book readers and other homebrew apps just work better with the DS screen / controls and the user interfaces are generally more intuitive and user-friendly.

Sticking with the book reader example, I'm sure such a homebrew reader on DS would use the sideways orientation, which is VERY natural and useful.

The biggest problem I have with my PSP is that my big man hands start cramping up after like 15-20 minutes of playing it. I don't really get that problem with my DS Phat.

Other than that, the PSP has some awesome games like Rock Band Unplugged, God of War, Patapon 2, and a bunch of other stuff already out and coming out in the next few months and next year.

Then just use a 16GB stick instead. ;) I actually prefer digital downloads on my PSP rather than lug along a bunch of UMD discs. I always hated that.

Better yet get one of these and use 32gb of cheaper MicroSD cards instead.

RyanPaulWhatever is right and wrong. The smallest PSP games are between 50-150MB, I believe Final Fantasy clocks in at 128mb, and Wipeout was something like 128mb. The biggest games run up to 1.8gb, with God of War clocking in at about 1.2gb. I have a 4gb card and have something like 6 games on it with a little room to spare. I also have a CR5400, but it's hard to find 16gb MicroSD cards for a reasonable price, so I'm waiting for a good deal.

Things to note about the PSP - if you want to use homebrew/emulators/ISOs, you will need a PSP-1000 or early gen PSP-2000. You can still do some of that stuff on the later 2000's and 3000's, but it's a pain in the ass (the hack doesn't "stick", so any time you fully power down the unit the hack goes away, and it can be a pain in the ass to reenable). Also, we're waiting for a newer m33 version, as in the latest version access to the PlayStation store is gone, and newer games are starting to require the latest firmware which isn't hacker friendly (Madden 10 for example).

There are other hacked firmwares out there which to allow access to the PlayStation store and newer games, but they're not very stable (GEN) and I have heard that they basically screw over homebrew (emulator) users too.

I just got an acekard 2i for the DS and I can tell you, after having a PSP for quite a while with it modded that the DS is hands down better gaming wise. And it doesn't do everything else (music, video, etc) well enough to warrant the trade off. Actually it's a decent movie player, but the battery life isn't that great and now I have an iphone that I use for video.

You can do a lot more with a hacked PSP than a DS with something like the Acekard. I mean, if all you want is to pirate games, the DS is way easier for that. PSP can do that, run a number of emulators, near perfect PS1 emulation (of any game), etc. It depends on what you're looking for, but I think a hacked PSP goes far beyond what the DS can do.

Have you even bothered to look at how much homebrew is available for both? The DS' sheer input flexibility is unmatched and the homebrew utilizing it translates into far more "to do" with a hacked unit. Also, one could argue that a PSP is easier to hack (the vast majority sold are 1000s and hackable 2000s). It doesn't necessarily require you to buy anything.
