Toshiba DVD drives are pretty good and reliable.
I have an older one SD-M1212
Works great...
I dont rip Music Cd's much..when I copy
"on-the-fly" gotta lower burner to 6x.
A member by the name of Shooters provided a link showing DAE speeds of various CD-ROM's here...
And here is the post I found the above link at, here.
You might want to check pricewatch for some lower prices, and also the thread I mentioned in my first post shows the Cendyne DVD sold at CompUSA as being a Toshiba 1402 as well.
I don't use my Toshiba for DAE, I have a Plextor 40x which is somewhat better, but use the Toshiba for CloneCD, as it reads sub-channel data. I have to add that Toshiba makes great drives, and don't think I would consider any other brand for an IDE CD-ROM or DVD player, 'cept maybe Pioneers for DVD.
Ah yes, I will be ripping a few cd's and mostly DVD's, I already have an ide plextor burner, so I need a combo dvd/cd rom so as not to get too many ide devices. I had heard the Toshibas were good drives, I don't want too much heat or noise, and my burner is just an 8432 anyway so 12x is OK. Cendyne would be OK too. Which models are rebadged Toshiba's?
Reading the thread, it just says that the Cendyne 12x Hitachi DVD player is in fact a Toshiba 1402. I have seen these at Fry's Electronics, but was kind of thrown by the mention of Hitachi on the box.
I've seen those as well, cheap too! now they seem to carry HiVal, I'll take alook around, might find a better price on one of those Cendyne Hitachi models, thanks!
Quickfingerz, my burner is only 8x, so would it be worth the extra money? I was also under the impression that the 16x drives are a bit noisy and generate a bit of heat? what do you think?
I just saw in your profile your from Oregon... Keep an eye open for the Fry's add down in Wilsonville... They just had some 12x DVD drive on sale for $77-$20 rebate, but not sure which model it was. They have the Cendynes there, but not sure of the price.
fishingeek, so noise, heat no problem, same difference? With a quick search, I see that I can get the 16x toshiba for a little more, but a 16x pioneer(tray load) cheaper than the 12x toshiba, I thought the pioneer was a good drive, what gives?
I'd stick with the Toshiba as it works well with CloneCD... reads anything....not to mention being a solid product. I think the faster Pioneers are too loud. I have enough noise with HSF's and case fans as it is.
I have heard that the pioneer is a great drive too. The reason I went with the Tosh is that it is rated one of the quietest and it is rated as the best reader for CloneCD. I like to back up my software and the Toshibas are great for reading data.
