I'm at a big UC (23K students) and there's not a web forum or anything of the sort, which might be very useful.

So..I'm probably going to make a general purpose web forum. my question is what are some tips for getting publicity starting out, and for maintaining a really strong community such as AT or SA forums?

Are you sure dpopiz? 😕

Eine web forum, ist gut, JA JA JA, eine web forum... ist gut, JA NEIN NEIN ZOMG>

You have to provide something besides the forums, like free porn, hardware reviews, videos. Then people visit the forums to discuss how to get the free stuff. Then a community develops. What do you have to offer?

i tried. it failed. you need to promote HARDCORE to get off the ground.
along the lines of hosting a party or something.
you could easily make the $ back with google ads though.

mine failed because i never really promoted it...i might still if i get time

good luck 🙂

I couldn't get people to go to mine, but I talked about it and advertised the hell out of it. Even offered free pizzas to people who completed a puzzle correctly.

Get a decent web host (host it on the schools servers if possible), use decent forum software and ADVERTISE.
